Wooden Rooster Sign

Here we go again! If you have been reading my blog from the beginning, you may be having a bit of deja vu and no you are not crazy, I did write about this project before. However, when I featured it the first time, the sign was ~ big surprise ~ red!

Well now, just about a decade later, I am going for a lighter look in my kitchen and that red sign was kind of dragging my vision down.

I could've just purchased, or made, something completely different for the space, but I think that it has been long established that I am a) a lazy and impatient decorator b) cheap and c) a creature of habit...I like what I like for a good long time. Just ask the mister of twenty years, who I met at a roller skating rink (don't laugh) at thirteen!

You see, I had the board, the white paint and the leftover wallpaper roosters on hand and I knew I would love the final product. I wasn't sick of the artwork, I just wanted it to be lighter.

I think this sign took me about a half an hour to complete, not including drying time. So free, easy and quick, it met all of my design requirements.

I started by removing the hangers on the back of the board.

Then I painted it a bisque color and mapped out where I wanted my roosters to be placed.

They are prepasted, so I just wet the board and the back of the roosters with water and pressed them in place. It's almost as easy as my sticker signs.

How To Apply Wallpaper Stickers

For good measure, I went over the top of them with a damp sponge, to make sure that all of the edges stuck. When everything was dry, I coated the entire board with Mod Podge.  I added the hangers to the red side of the board and I was done!

I have to say, now that the snow is gone and there is a vague bit of greenery to frame in my yard, I really love the lighter look.

It still looks great with all the red accents in the kitchen, but now the space looks more cohesive with other colors as well, like my orange tulips!

Farmhouse Kitchen Decor With Lace Curtains

I think it's just perfect for the spring and summer seasons. I imagine how sweet it will look when I open the window on a warm day and the dainty lace blows gently in the summer breeze.

Maybe I will add pots of grass to the sill and they will become a dramatic focal point, since the dominant red roosters are facing the wall! Poor little guys.

Of course, they are still there, in perfect shape, ready to reappear in the fall and winter after their warm weather hibernation. I still do love my red, but sometimes, it's nice to have options!

    1. I know, I do love that punch of red, but I figured I could go light for a little bit! :) Thanks for checking it out and have a super weekend, Julie!

  2. I really like the lighter look myself. But the red is fun for the warmth it adds to the winter months. I'd say if you can reverse it you have the best of both worlds. xo Diana

  5. What I like about light, neutral kitchens is that it is easy to change the accent color. I like both versions! We have a thing for roosters too! LOL xoxo

    1. Yes, exactly! There is still a very large red wall looming across from the window, but that one area looks so different now, by way of such a simple change! Thank goodness for light cabinets! ;)

  7. Well, I'm just astounded at how quickly you changed the look of your kitchen, my friend. I always loved the red, but now I love the bisque , too(which, by the way, is a perrrfect shade of off white, in my opinion). What I think is so cool is that you can change it back whenever you feel like it in two seconds (ok, maybe 5 seconds). And may I say you're not "lazy and impatient, and cheap". You're efficient, a good time manager, and frugal. All good qualities. Thanks for sharing this charming project. Hugs ~ Nancy

  11. What a great idea--a reversible sign. It looks great both ways but the fun will be switching it back and forth. My mil had two wall groupings in her dining area--one she used for spring and summer and one she used for fall and winter. The items were similar in size for each season's grouping so she was able to use the same nails in the same places and just hang the new grouping on the old nails. Your sign should work the same way with the added advantage of not having to store one when the other is displayed. My mom collects roosters so they are a favorite of mine as well. Good job.

    1. I like your MIL's idea too, Lorri! Sometimes you just like an arrangement the way it is, so what a super solution...just switch out the pictures for seasons! Smart! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks Jen! I love wide open spaces and even though our homes are set pretty closely together in the neighborhood, I insisted on big windows when we renovated! I am so glad I did...glad you like the white! :)

  13. Oh wow! You know how much I love red but I do love the sign painted white. It's so fresh and pretty there with the lace curtains and the tulips. It just screams spring time!! I really do appreciate your decorating philosophy and have come to the conclusion that there's not much I need to buy these days if I just do a little revamping like you did. :)

    1. I just don't have the space to store stuff, Stacey. I also get attached to things and don't really like to toss them, so this solves that problem, too! The white is growing on me...it's definitely fresh! :) I like your revamping, as well! Great minds....
