Upcycled Flower Pot Fruit Bowl DIY

Looking for an easy and elegant upcycle DIY?

Why not turn an old flower pot into a decorative fruit bowl!

Quick, simple and lovely.

Green flower pot with fruit inside

When it comes to design, I am a huge fan of the unexpected.

Whether it be fashion or home décor, I'm not likely to follow the crowd.

I didn't put granite in my kitchen, deliberately, and I don't own anything with a designer logo on it.

I also know that slipcovers are all the rage, but my den couch is floral...and no, it's not old, I just like flowers.
Originality excites me.

So when the plant I had purchased in this gorgeous green, crackle pot was moved outside (to save it from me and my black thumb), I started thinking outside the box.

I wanted to keep my pretty planter in the house, but I am a terrible gardener.

I kill most things. Really.

It's not on purpose, I'm just no good with plants.

So, I started brainstorming, came up with a few other ways I could use it and settled on a fruit bowl.

It was really very easy to make and I think the fruit looks so good against the lime green color and rustic texture.

Plus it's completely unexpected and original.

I honestly could've left the pot alone, but I thought it needed a bit of embellishment and a tiny bow did the trick.

I used a hot glue gun to affix a ribbon around the top of the pot just under the rim.

Then I added a sweet bow. Another drop of hot glue secured it in place.

Next, I popped a brand new liner into the pot...and poof!

I had just created a safe place to store and display my fruit.

I bought my liner at a local nursery during a 50% off sale, so I paid less than a buck for it. I actually got a lot of great bargains there that day.

I'm kind of a sucker for a sale.

Placing a plastic liner into a green flower pot

That's it!

That's the whole how-to...super simple, super cheap and super good looking!!

Of course, if I had a bigger pot, I could display bananas or pineapples or even a watermelon.

Not that I would...but I could and that would be really unexpected.

For now, I just have lemons in my flower pot fruit bowl.

They may not be the most original choice, but they look great, they're handy when I need one for my hot water and let's face it.

Even I can't kill a lemon!

 Are you an original?

Of course, if you'd like to go the other way and use unusual items to grow flowers, I have some of those, too. 😉

  1. Great idea! Yes, I like to do the unexpected, also. I think it is delightful to use something for other than it's original intended purpose. It adds such charm and interest. I have a large pewter bowl (that I found at a thrift store) in my bathroom that I keep full of cotton balls. It's handy and no one else has the same one.

    1. I love that idea! I think the bathroom is the best place for "the unexpected"...it's generally such a functional room, that anything out of the norm really pops! Have a great week and thanks for popping by!

  3. This is a fantastic idea! It's so hard to find pretty pots so you definitely don't want to part with that one. Also, there's nothing prettier than fruit.

I have to tell you that I appreciate your point of view. You know I feel a little out of step these days because of my love of color. No slip covers here either - because even though I love the look, I'm not about to wash them all the time. We both just need to keep doing our thing. :)

By the way, have you noticed more color in catalogs recently? We are trend setters!!

    1. Stacey, the mere thought of taking a slipcover off of a couch to wash it exhausts me! Plus I do love color and pattern. I just think it makes a room so much more interesting. I did go for white sofas in my living room, but that was after two plaid and one checked couch (red and white check of course!) that resided there for years! I wanted change. They are not however slipcovered and they are always adorned with tons of red pillows and throws! Great to have a partner in design crime! ;)

  7. Very cute, Kim! Who says a flower pot has to hold only flowers? But, I am wondering...re: your comment on my current post, about your beloved grandfather's flower philosophy, (which I absolutely LOVED!)...how is it that your indoor plants don't gain from his wise words?!!

    1. Ha! Poppy, somehow that advice did not translate inside!! As a matter of fact, I think my outdoor gardening success can also be attributed more to the sprinkler system, than to grandpa! ;)

    1. Thanks Maria! It's a ridiculously easy project, but I think it looks really nice in my kitchen...and it keeps the fruit out where the kids can see it! ;)

  9. Very cute idea, Kim! I have a small urn that could be the pots sista' -- I think I got it on the sale aisle at JoAnn's. It's probably because of our climate, but I cannot keep lemons out in a bowl or anything else. I have to keep them in ziploc bags or they deteriorate very, very quickly. Limes are the same way. They will keep for a couple of weeks or more in the fridge, but only a few days if left out. Too bad, too, because I think there is nothing prettier than a bowl of lemons or limes. I do have some fake ones that look pretty darn real!

    1. There are days here too, Carol, when the lemons seem to mold before my eyes, but the weather is beginning to turn now so they are doing ok! :)

  10. I love to see lemons displayed in a kitchen. They lend instant cheer. Your transformed pot is charming. I don't know if I'm an "original" Kim. Maybe. xxx ~ Nancy

    1. It's been hard keeping it looking pretty and full of fruit, because the kids keep eating it, but i guess that's a good thing, right? ;)
