Just Like Mr. Rogers

Dig out those fall fashions and recipes, like this easy baked apple, to keep you warm this season. Of course, I just wear my bathrobe. That's ok, right?

October has arrived and a cool breeze has blown in with it, right on cue.

Yesterday, we had the air conditioning on. It was humid and hot.

Today, it is coat weather.

Well, sweater weather anyway.

Of course, I haven't unearthed my sweaters from the closet yet, they're still hibernating, so I grabbed my bathrobe and threw it on over my clothes.

It's a really good look.

Me. Showered, dressed and made up, walking around the house in my oversized, fuzzy, bubblegum pink, fleece robe.

I do this a lot.

My husband teases me about it all.the.time.

What are you wearing?

I'm cold.

So put on a sweater.

I don't have a sweater that's big enough and comfy enough and warm enough. I like the bathrobe.

Well, it looks really good. Hot.

His words are dripping with sarcasm. My kids like the look just as much.

My friends are coming over, can you please take off the bathrobe.

I'm cold. And so the discussion starts all over again.

I remind them all that Cher changed into something really warm and snuggly in Moonstruck.

And so did Mr. Rogers, whenever he came home.

Then they remind me that yes, they both wore sweaters.

Frankly, I don't see what the big deal is.

I mean, I get it, it does tend to confuse people, like when they show up unexpectedly and see me in my robe at 2pm.

They always ask if I am feeling well. Or when a crew of kids shows up after school and asks if I just woke up from a nap. My hair and makeup are done people, does no one notice this?

The judgment is harsh, but I shake it off. I'm used to it. I have teenage girls, they think everything I wear is questionable. I am not taking fashion advice from them.

Besides, they should be happy that I've upgraded.

My old bathrobe was a tattered, grey number with black piping. I looked like I had escaped from an institution wearing that robe. My kids would watch Friends and see Mr. Heckles, the crazy neighbor from downstairs and say, Mom, you look like that guy.

But I was warm.

I guess, I really should swap out my clothes for the season, since it looks like fall is here to stay.

There's got to be a big sweater in there somewhere.

In the meantime, I leave you with a fall recipe to warm you up, we are just starting to dig those out from hibernation, as well.

Baked Apples With Cinnamon and Granola

Cut an apple into slices. We like Granny Smith for this recipe, but you can use any kind. I have one of those nifty things you press down on and it cores the apple and slices it all in one shot.

Lay the slices on a baking sheet, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Bake for about 10-15 minutes on 350 degrees. When they come out, drizzle honey and granola on top and eat up.

You do not need to wear your bathrobe when you make these.

But I did.

How will you stay warm this fall?

  1. Hello Kim,
Oh I love it about how everyone kids you about the bathrobe. I have to admit that you and I do the same thing. In the winter I like to be dressed but wear my pj bottoms if I'm not going out anywhere! I get teased in my house all the time.
Well I love this easy to make apple recipe and I think I'll make this soon. Thanks for the laughter today and the recipe. Have a nice weekend.

The rest of the family can run around in 'real' clothes if they want to, and be cold. You hereby have my permission to feel totally comfortable wearing your fuzzy pink robe.

  7. Hi Kim,
I think you are so smart to wear the warmest and most comfy robe. I am the opposite I do not like all the bulk of my robe so when I put my pj's on at night I put on a heavy open sweater instead of a robe. My husband teases me am I getting ready for bed or to go somewhere. I just tell him it is warm and comfy and I am ready at a moments notice to head out the door lol! It is all about comfort and you got this girl.

  8. Do you know who else used to wear a bathrobe? Years ago in New York, there was a mobster who pretended to be crazy (at least that is what I think) by walking around in the streets in a bathrobe. Now I don't know if he went to jail or not but you be careful...We don't want anyone getting the wrong idea.

Thanks for the recipe, and have a great weekend. (I also walk around in pj's all day if I don't have to go out, one of the perks of being a blogger ;) )

I can certainly see why! I remember this story...and Mary, my kids already treat me like I have committed a fashion crime! I hope that's not punishable by jail! ;)

  10. Kim, you are so funny! My warm cozy attire falls somewhere in between your bathrobe and a sweater. Technically, I guess it would be considered a sweater but it was originally from Gap body shop--I picked it for .50 at a thrift store ;) It is long, and big on me and I have always wrapped around me like a robe. It is the first thing I grab when I start to get chilly. Unfortunately, despite frequent washing the white is getting dingy but I can't bear to part with it. It feels like a warm hug every time I wear it! p.s. The apple granola looks delicious!

    1. I love the fireplace, too, Diana. Ours is in the living room, which is a small room off on its own. I also have an electric one (fake!) in the basement. I have been campaigning for years to get one in the kitchen, since that is where I spend the majority of my day. So far, no luck, but like my sweet husband always says, I can whine about things longer than he can stand to listen to it…so there’s hope yet! ;) Until then, I have my robe. Celery, huh? I do look good in green…

  12. Too funny about the bathrobe! I don't like sweaters - they're bulky and itchy, for the most part. But I *love* hoodies and live in the all fall and winter. Try one of those! The apples with honey and granola sound delicious.

  16. Hi Kim, Your recipe looks and sounds delish! I'm enjoying a cup of tea right now, and these would make a perfect snack! We're having the same kind of weather, it goes from really hot, to really cold, seems like over night! Yesterday it was spirit day at my daughter's school, and this specific day was PJ day. My daughter didn't wear her PJs, but she did wear her 'Diva' Pink leopard bathrobe, and then walked about half a mile in 100F heat! I just wanted to stop by and say Thank you for visiting, I've been a silent reader of your delightful blog, visiting from Benita's! Wishing you a lovely weekend! ~Christine

  17. I'm all warmed up from laughing at your post! I bet you would be ready for a fashion shoot compared to me. I just keep layering, not wanting either my robe or a sweater. Until winter gets here I keep putting on summer shirts until I'm comfortable. As a matter of fact, I probably look like a bag lady on the street, wearing my whole wardrobe sometimes!

Apples and cinnamon, now that's Fall in my book!

  18. Hi Kim, The apple recipe looks so good and easy to prepare. Thanks for sharing. I do the same thing at times with my robe. I seem to always be cold even in the summer when the AC has to be on because we are 102 degrees. Now the nights and mornings are cooler but the day heats up so the AC still has to stay on. Like you, I have not taken out my sweaters yet so it's easy to grab my robe. My son stops by and says, are you okay mom? Yes, just cold. LOL
Your post just makes me smile knowing, I'm not the only one freezing in October!!

  19. At least your hair and makeup are done! Half the time I don't have makeup on (hair is always done!) and you wouldn't believe what I walk around the house in. I do own a fluffy white bathrobe but it is brand new because I don't want to ruin it by wearing it! Anyways, your baked apples sound perfect for Fall and something I would love to eat for breakfast.

  20. What a YUM recipe!! Will be giving it a try this weekend...I'm so loving this weather!! We've got the influx of cold as well and I've been bundled up around the house and the office. I used to have a big, pink, fluffy robe like that and I wore it until it literally fell apart. Now, I wear big sweaters, lots of layers and then snuggle up with the heating pad on the sofa if I'm reading...but that's a secret...LOL. I love cold weather and like to be a little chilled, but also want to be snuggly! :-) Hugs!!

  21. Your attire sounds good to me....that is if it ever cools down here! I'm anxiously waiting for cool enough weather to wear a sweater or even long sleeves, and I cannot wait to wear my "faux Uggs".....best Costco buy I ever made! The recipe sounds good and simple! My double oven has been broken for a couple of months (didn't really need to use it), but hubby found a place to repair the "mother board," and we (actually he, I was napping) just got it hooked up yesterday. Now, I'm feeling the need to make something "pumpkiny!"

  29. I get the irony of saying you don't like to cook in your last post and then giving us a recipe in the next lol

I do the same thing with a really ugly sweater. If it's not cold enough for a robe, I even wear it with my pjs. I even wear it out of the house with my dresses. Not a good look either. I do have other sweaters, but they're not as cozy, so I get it.
