Shop 'Till You Drop Or Not

July 10, 2017

When it comes to shopping, are you a browser? Are you a shop 'til you dropper? Or not? I used to love browsing, meandering through the aisles for hours, looking for unique pieces to fill my home or my closet. However, as the kids got older and my free time became more and more limited, I found that getting in the car, fighting traffic and crowds, was less and less appealing.

I usually knew exactly what I wanted or needed and didn't to waste time in search of...

So, I started shopping online. Browsing there, instead.

In the beginning, I combed the internet for the best deals, the most generous return policies and free shipping offers. I cross referenced and compared sites for hours before I finally placed an order. And then the wait for treasure began. Free shipping is generally not quick shipping.

Today, however, I am all about simplicity and speed, so I use Amazon Prime. I get what I want for a great price and it arrives at my house in the blink of an eye.

I know a lot of you are Prime subscribers, but I was kind of late to the game, joining just last summer when my daughter went to college. They had everything she needed, from textbooks to sheets, and we had it all shipped to her dorm.

It was awesome, we barely had to pack.

Fabulous.

Of course, since then, we've purchased a lot more than freshman college supplies. We have become avid Prime shoppers. Plus we are addicted to several of their original shows.

Catastrophe anyone?

So when I found out that tomorrow, July 11th, was Prime Day on Amazon. I had to share.

Instead of Christmas in July, it's kind of like Black Friday in July. There are super deals on Amazon only for Prime members.

They start tonight, July 10th at 9pm EST. And if you shop through Alexa you can get deals as early as 7pm EST. I do not have Alexa, but tomorrow might be the day for me to scoop her up.

I am also going to check out the Prime deals on more of that back to school stuff. Everything seems to evaporate over the summer.

I wanted to ask, does anyone use the Amazon Dash Buttons? I have
friends who love them, but I have yet to give it a go. I'd love to hear your experiences...

In the meantime, while I am waiting for the Prime Day Deals to begin, I have made a little shopping list.

I have had my eye on this adorable wooden lamp for a few days. I have been looking for something small and wood for my kitchen server and I think this might do just the trick.

This beautiful floral pillow would look great in my living room. I love the red, but I am super smitten with the green and yellow accents. Branching out a little in the color world...

Christmas in July anyone? I love this understated pre-lit wreath. I could doll it up with a simple ribbon or some jingle bells. Holiday crafting in the summer? Absolutely. Just maybe not for this price!

Simple Pre-Lit Christmas Wreath

Which leads me to thinking about Christmas gifts. Teenage girls are super hard to buy for, but they love accessories...like these pretty arm warmers. I wanted to order them last year, but I waited too long and they were sold out by the time I got my act together.

Then I had to get in the car.

And drive around town to find something else.

For full price.

In the snow.

Boo.

Shopping For Fall Accessories

  1. Laughing! I just placed an Amazon Prime order an hour ago for very glamorous things - a cat litter box and a dust ruffle for a queen size bed. If it means I don't have to battle the heat and traffic, I'm all for it!

    1. Haha! Stacey, I know the feeling. Sometimes the kids see an Amazon Prime box and get stars in their eyes, only to open it up and find air conditioning filters or fish food! 😉

  2. I don't do an awful lot of regular shopping so no Prime for me but my kids all use it and love the free shipping. Maybe someday. My brother has an Alexa and uses it quite a bit but not for shopping. I know that he has his "to do" list on there. He loves tech stuff. He got my parents one for Christmas and they mostly use it to get weather forecasts. They are not ones to embrace new technology quickly but I am thinking it will get better.

    1. I held out with Prime because I didn't want to pay for it. I am so frugal, but it just made sense for college. We literally bought everything there. I remember my own freshman year, my mom and I had to hoof it all over the mall and discount stores for what I needed, then we had to pack it up and lug it up to school. This was amazing. It was worth the fee for that alone, and then if she needed refills or textbooks, it was all at her fingertips. No shipping care packages. And I'm like you, not a regular shopper, I try to only buy what I need, but it has been helpful. We're so spoiled now! I laugh about Alexa too...everyone I know just uses it for music. :)

  3. I've never heard of Alexa...that's how technologically behind I am. I do have Prime though. I didn't know about the sale, so I'm going to hoof it over there b/c I need several things. Great post Kim!

  4. I got Prime just recently. But I don't know about any of the things you mention except for tomorrow being a sale. Please enlighten me on the TV shows, etc.

    1. Brenda, I am pretty new to Prime, too and I am still learning about the features...like those Dash buttons. As far as the TV shows/ movies go, I had no idea they were included, then Amazon actually sent me a letter telling me that I wasn't taking advantage of that feature. If you go to the Departments menu, click on Amazon Videos, then on Included With Prime and a bunch of choices will come up!

  5. I am not a prime member but I do buy a lot of stuff at amazon that I used to be able to buy at grocery stores. They deleted items that I really love or need to buy so I go to amazon. If grocery stores want to stock liquor more than Jello or other necessaries, I will go to amazon, every time. Now I am looking for a source for something my handicapped daughter needs.

    1. I totally get it, Jane. So many of the items I love and use seem to be disappearing off my grocery store shelves, too. Amazon is helpful, although, I do wish they were still on the shelves...I hope you find a good source for your daughter's needs.

    2. That's so aggravating, isn't it? You find something that you like, you start buying it regularly and then, suddenly, it's not on the shelves anymore. I don't WANT to have to order a bunch of everyday, weekly type things from online. I WANT them to be on the SHELVES at the STORE!

  6. I have not heard about the dash button...so you have to have one for every product you buy from Amazon? I'm totally lost on why this would really be helpful? If I'm too busy to restock my supplies then I think I'm way too busy?!

I'll be checking for baby shower & baby stuff on my kid's Amazon registry for sure.

    1. I know people who totally love the Dash buttons. They have them positioned in the laundry room, for example, and when detergent is running low, they just hit the button and the product is ordered. There is no need to go to the store or log on to your account. One push while it’s on your mind and done. Of course, the decorator in me could never deal with all those buttons peppered around the house. Have fun shopping for baby….so exciting!! ♡

    2. I feel the same way. If I'm too busy to pick up detergent when I'm at the store for fruit, milk and eggs then I'm entirely too busy!

  7. We are prime members but don't do too much shopping in general. You remember...I keep things for decades :).

    Love catastrophe! Crazy stuff!

  8. I love Amazon Prime! Not a big shopper, but love to have it when I need it. I've toyed with getting Alexa too. Our older son gave us an Amazon Fire for the TV for Christmas and it has Alexa in the remote. Pretty fun! I'll have to do some browsing today...you never know what you'll find.

    1. I am so curious about Alexa, Nancy. I think she is like Siri, yes? I think in the future the world will be run by the Alexas and Siris....as long as they clean my house, I am ok with that! Happy Shopping!!

      Delete
    2. Unfortunately, neither Siri or Alexa cleans the house for you. If they did, I'd but one in a heartbeat!!!! My kids have an Alexa and, as far as I can tell, it's mostly used by them to find and listen to music.

    3. Music, that's what I hear from most people. I think I'll wait for the mopping model. 😉

  10. I was never a shop 'till you drop shopper. I've always been a browser or a totally focused Hunter of the specific thing. I will hunt down a specific thing online but don't care for browsing online. I prefer to see, touch, smell things in person..... can't touch a fabric online, lol!

Amazon prime is great....shows are fantastic.....free shipping is pretty nifty. Prime Day. I usually order one or two things on Prime day. Today was the 8quart Instant Pot! Love my 6quart Instant Pot that I bought on a Black Friday Amazon prime day a couple of years ago!

    1. Hunter! That was the word I was looking for, Kim!! I wanted to contrast shopping styles, browsers and...and I couldn't put my finger on the word. Thank you! 🙂I have heard a lot about the Instant Pots, they seem to be huge sellers. Lots of fans. I am not a cook, which should make me want to run and get one, but I'd rather buy fabric, too!!

    2. Lol! You're welcome! It's a standing joke in the family and amongst our friends that if you need to find a particular thing that's proving elusive, just call Kim because she's got Bloodhound genes and she'll hunt for it until hell freezes over or she finds it.... whichever comes first.

In reference to the Instant Pot, it gives you lots more time to play with fabric! Easy to learn to use, easy to clean, set it and walk away to play with your fabric, come back to a delicious one pot meal! TOTALLY worth the expenditure!

  13. Hi Kim. I love Amazon. Online shopping is the only way to go as far as I am concerned. That is where I get all my bootiful, cheapy pillow covers which I love. However, I do not belong to Prime, which I know is very pitiful of me and I think I will have to rectify!!..Happy Shopping..xxoJudy

    1. I love all your pillows, Judy and I am ordering some as we speak...er...type! I have to say, I was so reluctant to pay that Prime fee, but the college thing made it worth it. And now my husband is so hooked on that 2 day shipping, if he has to wait any longer than that for his stuff, he can't handle it. :)

  14. Yes indeed,
    I am an A Prime gal . . .
Good news about the textbooks . . .
I just passed the word on to my daughter.
Wish I had had Jordon's book list for Prime Day

I have never been much of a Strolling Mall Shopper.
List and in and out shopper . . . ME.
SO Amazon Prime is for me . . .
They must know me personally . . .
Other than my library visits, most of my books are from Amazon.
Order, usually here the next day.
    AMAZING!

    1. That immediate shipping is an amazing thing, Lynne, I agree. I remember when I was little, I saved my money forever to buy Sea Monkeys from the back of a comic book and they took FOREVER to arrive....and they didn't have clothes or suitcases like they did in the ad. Today, kids can order from Amazon and get their own brine shrimp in a day!! Ha!! 😉

    1. Hi Cindy, I am glad you enjoy Amazon. I enjoy shopping there too and up until last summer I didn't have any idea of the benefits of Prime, like the TV shows, etc. So this year when Prime Day came around, I decided to share what I knew with my readers, as I try to write about what interests me in the moment. I was not paid for sharing this information, although, I often am paid by companies to share their products and if I believe in them, I do. I am however an affiliate for Amazon, which means if you click over to Amazon from my site and purchase something from them, I do make a few pennies which helps defray the cost of maintaining this website and email lists. I have always clearly disclosed that. I value reader input so I thank you for sharing your thoughts today and wish you a lovely afternoon. 🙂

  16. I took advantage of the free trial for Prime but I am not subscribed to it. I do check Amazon whenever I am looking for something in particular. I think it would be dangerous for me to have unlimited free shipping!

    1. It’s easy to get carried away online, and with free shipping, I totally get it Vanessa. I am like you, love to see and touch and feel. What I do like about Amazon is the reviews. I always check to see what people say and those people that post their own photos of the item? I love them!! At Christmas I buy a lot of gifts there and those reviews make or break my purchase decisions. It’s *almost* like touching and seeing!! ;)

  21. I love Amazon Prime! We've been members for years now. We first signed up under my son's name when he was in college. They give college students Prime for half the price, so it worked out great since he was living at home while attending college. Prime is one of those things I don't think I could do without now. Just like my Keurig. :) Speaking of...my aunt scooped up a Keurig during the big Amazon sale and got if half off for only $60! Did you get any good deals?

  22. Just found your blog and just reading this. I don't do Amazon or Amazon Prime. One I am not much of a shopper. Two, and this is my main reason, if we don't support our locally owned stores, they will soon not exist. For the same reason, I never enter Walmart.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you there, supporting locally owned stores is very important. I am not much of a shopper either and I do prefer to do most of it in town, as well, especially my grocery shopping, that is local for sure. Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods, the stores are mostly corporate owned, even on Main Street, it's Gap, Urban Outfitters, Aerosoles and CVS. There are so few mom and pops left it's very sad....and yes, I never enter Walmart either...or Kmart...or Target. Not my gig. Thanks for adding your voice to the conversation, I really hope you'll come back again!
