My husband and I are pretty boring weekenders.
Our predictable Saturdays usually include a walk on the waterfront, a few hours down at the beach, game night or dinner with friends and of course a few DIYs around the house.
And if we're really feeling adventurous, we might hit the local odd lot store to poke around.

It's almost as exciting as thrifting, because you truly never know what you're going to find.
For example, a few weeks ago I was wandering down the kitchen aisle and found this darling spring table runner for $7.99.

The price was ridiculous for any kind of table runner, but this one had a linen front, a silky Shantung looking back and a delicate trim running around the outside.
Plus, as a bonus there was not one - but two - beautiful lace applique bunnies, complete with pearl accents and plushy cottontails.
I mean come on.

Not because I wanted to set my table for Easter...but because I wanted to chop it up, get crafty.
And make pillows.
How To Make A Pillow From A Table Runner
As soon as I saw those two seperate fabrics on the front and back, I knew I could stuff it. I'd just need to cut it, add some fluff and sew it back up. I've done it before with placemats. So super easy, right?
Well, not quite...but pretty close.
Remember, as with most of my DIYs, this idea can be tailored for any holiday or season. This technique will work with any double sided table runner...not just bunnies. Although, they may be the cutest. 😉
First I had to determine what size my pillow would be.
Since I wanted the bunny centered, with the same amount of space above and below him, I measured from the bottom of the bunny to the bottom of the pillow. That was about 2 inches.

Then I placed my measuring tape on the other side of the bunny and folded the fabric about 2 inches above his ear.

Of course, I needed to add about another inch for seam allowance before I cut.
I did that using a straightedge and my very sharp sewing scissors.

The cut fabric opened up a lovely pocket to add stuffing. However, the one thing it was missing was that dainty trim.
And a pillow with only 3 sides of trim would not do. At all.

The middle portion of the table runner provided the trim I needed.
I grabbed my seam ripper and began removing stitches from the bunny-less portion of the runner. I kept going until I had released enough trim to make it across the top of my pillow.

Next, I got my sewing machine out, ironed my seams in place and braced myself to add the trim.
Or at least attempt to add it.

The trickiest part was joining the new trim to the old and making the corners look good. I'd never done anything like that before, so I kind of winged it.
Again, I grabbed the seam ripper to free up some of the existed trim, on the sides of the pillow, so it'd have enough give to make it around the corner.

Then I tacked it in between the fabrics and overlapped it with the new piece of trim.

And then ran that corner through the machine to stitch it all together.

That part was not easy, the fabric was thick and my machine labored, but once it was done it looked great.
I have to say, I surprised myself with that one.
Rounding the home stretch, I sewed a bit more of the trim in place using the same technique.
Tucking the trim in between the front and back material and stitching it in place from the top/ front of the pillow, keeping the needle as close to the edge as I could.
Mimicking the same stitches used on the runner.
Now, since my pillow was a custom creation, I couldn't use a standard sized pillow form.

Instead, I used Poly-Fil. On sale for three bucks a bag.

I left a large opening as I needed room to add fluffy handfuls of it inside. I also used the enclosed stick to push it into the tight corners.

Then I closed the big hole up, rounded the last corner and I was done with yet another upcycled bunny pillow.
All told it took me less than an hour to create this adorable addition to my spring cottage.

Even more precious than I thought it would be on that chilly Saturday shopping expedition.
Warming up my home with a little bit of handmade charm.

Oh and in case you're wondering, nope, that's not two pillows.
He just hopped from one room to another.
I was all ready to create a second, when I decided that the other bunny would make a fabulous piece of wall art for Easter. That's in process.
And keep your eyes open for even more table runner DIYs, because I still have the entire middle piece waiting in the wings for its upcycle.
That's a lot of crafting from an $8 outing.
Hmm...maybe my weekends aren't so boring after all.
😉

ReplyDeleteHaha...thanks Sara! I really do like the bunnies. I can't believe what a bargain they were...two for one!
DeleteThat bunny is absolutely precious and I love it as a pillow. Adding the trim was a bit tricky - at least it would have been for me, but you did a great job, Kim. I can't wait to see what you do with the rest!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Ann and yes, it was tricky. I am not a seamstress, but I managed. I think my grandmother would be proud! Thanks for inspiring me with your creative hops. It definitely forces me to think outside the upcycling box and challenge my skills! ❤️
DeleteYour pillow is darling Kim. I could see a pillow initially, but the way you created this pillow was not where I thought you would be going with it. What a great DIY and use of fabric! You've made a few sparks go off in this brain of mine. Hoppy Easter!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cara! I had a vision, but really didn't think about that trim...until it was too late and the cuts had been made. No turning back, but thankfully it worked out! Hoppy Easter to you, too!
DeleteWhat a great find and a really cute cushion.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great fix with the lace trim, no one is going to guess it was a bit of a "winging it" type situation!
Thanks Julie! I take that as high praise from an accomplished seamstress like yourself!! ☺️
DeleteWow, what a cleaver way to repurpose a table runner. Your pillow is beautiful, Kim! It looks so chic and cozy! Perfect for Easter and Spring!

DeleteVery cute! I love Odd Lots! I'm surprised I haven't run into you there! It is great for planters and gardening supplies! I also have the very large mats at my back door that are about $10 and work great!
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised I haven't seen you there either! We go often and yes, gardening supplies are the best. When we went to Maine recently we saw one there and stopped and shopped. Haha. We just can't resist. I'll look for you next time I''m there!!
Deletehi kim love this runner! what are some game noght games you like?

ReplyDeleteThanks Patti! I'm all about those bunnies this season.
DeleteAww, so cute! I'll bet the wall art will be adorable too. My weekends sound a lot like yours, except for the dining/games with friends and beach time. I wish!
ReplyDeleteOur beaches have been in a deep freeze for months now, so there hasn’t been a lot of that lately…but those shops are always open!! Haha!! And thanks!
DeleteI am always in aww of your talents especially sewing. This pillow is just adorable. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteKris, you are making me blush. Thank you! Trust me my sewing talents are inconsistent at best, but I try! 😉
DeleteVery cute pillow Kim. Such a great buy too. So fun to be creative.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda! It really was a bargain and it's been so cold here, it was nice to have a new inside distraction while I impatiently wait for spring to arrive. 🙃

ReplyDeleteThank you, Briana!! I had fun with this one.
DeleteDarling pillows. Pillows like this are very expensive in stores. Everything is right now.
ReplyDeleteThanks Betsy! Yes, it was a real bargain. I was in Marshall's a few days later and their runners and pillows were 4x the price. Yikes.
DeleteDear Kim, your pillows are precious and delightful!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda! What a lovely comment.
DeleteWeekends for me are less exciting than yours, clearly! Very cute pillow, love the detail on it. (:
ReplyDeleteThanks Gina! The details are definitely more than I would’ve expected for the price.
DeleteThat is a darling idea, Kim. Really sweet and it makes me smile. Have a wonderful rest of the weekend- xoDiana
ReplyDeleteHi Diana! Thank you! I just had to have that runner when I saw it in the store…next to the spatulas and mismatched plates. Gotta love those odd lots shops. I hope you’re having a nice weekend and staying warm.
DeleteKim, you made the cutest bunny pillow! You have been crafting so much and everything you make comes out looking so nice!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Julie! It's been a long winter and being stuck inside has given me a lot of time to play with my craft supplies. I guess practice makes perfect...well, as long as you don't look too close at some of them!! 🤣
DeleteWhat an adorable cushion, I thought it was a bit plain as a table runner. But really great as a cushion.
ReplyDeleteThanks Anita! I'm not really much of table runner decorator, but pillows...now that's another story! ☺️
DeleteYour pillow is fabulous! What a great find and such a great idea to turn it from table runner to pillow.
ReplyDelete💕 Thank you, Joanne!! I'm so glad I brought it home with me.
DeleteWell done Kim, a cute and sweet pillow.
ReplyDeleteAnd you did a great job on the tutorial for us blog readers.
I absolutely love this. Cute bunny on an adorable pillow. I would like to buy 10 for my home.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous find! I would have put that in my cart too, but not sure I would have been able to make such an adorable pillow. If I ever find something as cute, I'm sending it to you to make!
ReplyDeleteOh how cute that turned out, Kim! I have that same HL My Happy Place pillow!
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh though as your weekends that you think are boring, are a lot more exciting than mine. 😊
