Decorating Cheat | Autumn Splendor Sticker Sign

October 08, 2013

Make a super easy decorative wall sign for fall with a vinyl sticker. It's an easy, inexpensive way to a fabulous accessory.

Are you ready for the easiest project ever?  I have another decorating cheat to share and it will make you look like a DIY superstar!

I'm going to show you how to make a spectacular seasonal sign in less than 30 minutes!  Whether you are an expert at handmade signage looking for the occasional shortcut or a total beginner, intimidated by the prospect of lettering, I've got the answer for you.

I was at the craft store and this cute little Autumn Splendor wall art sticker caught my eye...probably because it was under a big tag that had it listed for $1.99.

Yup, $1.99.  Right away, I thought it would made a great sign...just paint and stick and I would be done, and honestly, it was just that easy.

Of course, these vinyl stickers are available in any craft store and I have seen them in the dollar stores, as well. They are plentiful around the holidays and come in a variety of pithy sayings.

To start, I cut a pine board to 28 inches long, since my sticker was 24 inches, I figured that would give it a nice border. If you are not handy, the people at Home Depot are more than happy to cut wood for you!

Next, I painted the board with ordinary craft paint and I did not prime it. I wanted a more finished look, so I did not distress the board in any way, but hitting it with a chain or hammer to dent it up and round out the corners would give it a weathered look.  A little sanding after the paint dried would also age the piece.

I let the board dry while I emptied the dishwasher and then I literally peeled the sticker off its backing and stuck it on the board. That was it.

There was no stenciling, stamping, measuring or planning. I didn't need a fancy machine either. Super easy, super cheap and super cute!

Here are a few other examples of my cheating ways!

Some Quick Tips:
  • Wall art stickers of this type are sold everywhere and for every occasion.  I have seen them for holidays and also in patterns and sayings appropriate for general décor.  There are some really cute ones out there for kids' rooms!
  • I could've gone over the sticker with decoupage gel to keep it sealed on the board, but I did not. I would like the option of peeling it off and repainting the board to add a new sticker in the future.  For $1.99 I can afford to be a little frivolous!  However, I don't plan to be totally wasteful, I'm already set to use the back of the board for Christmas!
  • My sign is currently a shelf sitter, but add a simple picture hanger and it would be ready for the wall. If I want to flip the sign, I can remove the hanger and those tiny nail holes will just add character!

What do you think of my splendid sticker sign?

Would you cheat?

    1. Diane, you should do it! It was sooo easy and I am very happy with the way it turned out. I thought that you may be able to see that it was a sticker on the board, but it must be a very good sticker (for $1.99!), because unless you are really close, you would never know!

  19. Kim, I was sure I had posted about loving that great sign! It still calls my name and then I hear a voice say, "forget it, you'll never complete it." It really appears more difficult than it sounds. Love it! Oh, perhaps, I'll try it for new fall! Thanks for the inspiration.

It really was a quick project, but I'm glad it looks like it entailed a bit more! Let me know if do make one, I would love to see it!
