Our Kitchen Addition: A Before and After

October 21, 2013

When we moved into our home, the kitchen was old and tiny and basically unusable.

We knew it needed a major makeover from the minute we walked through the door. A country cottage kitchen makeover to suit the style of the house.

Come take the tour.

White Cottage Kitchen Decor with red accents

Although I have featured the different areas of my kitchen, as background for other projects or posts, I have never displayed my kitchen as a whole.

I figured after seven months of blogging, perhaps it was time.

Like most families, we spend the bulk of our time in this gorgeous room and I don't mind one bit.

Of course, it didn't start out this way, I have written before about the multitude of renovations this house required when we move in a little over a decade ago.

The kitchen was no exception.

The house was built in the 1920's as a summer beach cottage.

We fell in love with its charm immediately, but knew that when we added on to the house.

We wanted to do it in a way that would respect the integrity of the original structure and flow seamlessly from old to new.

We'd already started the renovations when I snapped this shot, but basically that was the whole kitchen.

It was an 8.5 x 9 foot space, with two doorways and a tiny fridge tucked into a closet on the back wall...no table, no counter or cabinet space and no room for more than two tiny people.

We added a small addition off the back of the house and it was honestly the best investment we've ever made.

Old kitchen in the middle of construction

We added that pocket door that now leads into our family room

I dressed the wall with some thrift store finds, my handmade Pottery Barn knock off wooden sign, a curbside table upcycle and my mom's old deacon's bench.

It has storage inside which still holds my kids' old baby toys for when friends or family come by.

This is that same space now.

Red Kitchen wall with country decor

On the other side of the wall, we added a much needed and constantly used desk. It was one of the best things we ever did.

Initially I wanted a service area or butler's pantry.

A big old display hutch and gorgeous collections dressing up my dream kitchen. While it would've been very pretty, I'm glad my husband talked me out of it, as we use the desk every single day.

Kitchen desk with fabric on glass cabinets

The kitchen is basically a budget job ~ well, at least as much of a budget job as any major renovation can be.

When I say budget, I mean that I'm not into custom, unless we can make it ourselves.

The furniture was either clearance, thrifted or free. The cream colored cabinets are Kraftmaid from Home Depot and almost everything else came from that store, as well.

The floor is a pre-finished hardwood, from the clearance aisle, the sink, fixture, lighting and cabinet hardware were all pulled right off the shelf.

I deliberately chose the laminate countertops, as I wanted them to just fade away. (Well, I really wanted mahogany, but that is a post for a different day.)

Update- I now have a wood countertop in my bathroom. It's a start.

I made the same choice with the appliances, wanted them to blend and fade, as I am not a big cook.

I was more interested in creating a beautiful room that I would love to look at, than a chef's paradise.

I am definitely a form over function girl, although I have to say, it all functions beautifully and still looks new after almost 20 years.

Kitchen hood with valentine banner

The hood is my favorite element in the room. I absolutely love it.

I saw a kitchen in the store catalog that had a more ornate one, we pared it down to suit our taste. My husband built it himself.

I could honestly stare at it all day long.

Most of the year, my red wreath is enough to adorn it, but I do really like to dress it up.

Ok...another update! I have a new more neutral wreath now.

I think it provides such a gorgeous focal point for the room and at night, when the under counter and in cabinet lights (all on dimmers) are lit up, it really is a sight.

decorating with red in the kitchen

I do not have a dining room, the house is a tiny beach cottage, so choices had to me made.

In order to accommodate big (very big!) family gatherings.

So, I have two eating areas, including my farmhouse kitchen island and my round corner table.

Christmas Kitchen including white lights on the windows around a round table

I knew that I wanted a very open feel in the kitchen and so I designed the room to have high ceilings, six foot windows and a Palladian slider that look out at the pool

The Palladian window was a freebie from my sister, discarded from her renovation.

2020 Update! I recently made full length panels for the windows. Big change!

How awesome is that?

White and red country kitchen decor

The kitchen is predominantly light.

I purposely matched the wall color to the cabinets, which are bisque with a painted, distressed finish.

There's a lot of bright color in this room and I like drama in my decorating, so I punctuated the entire space with red accents and a very, very red wall facing the windows.

I picked up the pine sever at goodwill for $75.

Country Kitchen Dining area and dining table

I'm currently campaigning for a fireplace on this wall. To be honest, it's not going very well.

That's ok, I'm patient and I am pretty sure that I can whine about things a little longer than my husband can stand to listen to it.

In the meantime, I do love the server and I can dress it up any way that I like and I do. I change it out often, multiple times every season.

decorate your kitchen for fall with white pumpkins and

I'm a sucker for a cute accessory or colorful plate and I recently added the "farmhouse" sign. After almost fifteen years I needed a change and it was a super simple DIY.

Wooden Farmhouse sign hanging over pine plate rack

I hope that you have enjoyed the tour of my kitchen.

It was done over a decade ago and other than replacing the fabric on the kitchen chairs, swapping out accessories and repositioning the table, it has basically remained the same.

Well that and making new curtains often. I do love my fabric swaps.

white kitchen with red accents

I just adore it and have no desire to change a thing and I'm not sure that I ever will.

I'm not exactly certain what that says about me.

My kids tell me that it means I am boring, old and set in my ways.

I prefer to see it as being confident in my style.

  8. Hi Kim,

Well, you know that I have a passion (read: obsession!), with red, so, of course, I'm going to love your pretty kitchen for the sole reason that it accents your space so nicely. One example of this, and my favourite area of your kitchen is your dramatic red wall, the backdrop to that warm, deacon bench and side table. So cozy and inviting! Similarly, your server, dressed in all its finery, is pure storybook charm and the fact that you got it for a steal makes it even sweeter! How lovely to be welcomed every day by this most bright, bold and beautiful space! I could sit here for hours, just as your own family gravitates and gathers here, too.

  16. Love it! I'm so impressed at your eye for decorating and how beautiful it all came out...I do love our kitchen too, though I can take none of the credit since it was a fairly new house and the family before us built it/designed it. I would have liked a desk in the kitchen like you have -- a place for paying bills, etc., but other than that, it works for us, or I should say for my husband since he's the cook!

    1. Haha! My husband is the real cook here, too! It's great to move into a place that does not need construction. It is a real pain! If our house had a decent kitchen, I would not have renovated, but I am actually glad it was a necessity, as I am thrilled with the results!

    1. Honestly, Amanda, it was actually much easier to remodel our kitchen in an new addition space than if we had to reconfigure an old one. I totally get that challenge. A poor layout is hard to fight and it is not always practical and affordable to alter the bones of a house. I knew what I wanted, but I still went to every big box store and high end cabinet shop in the area for consults and then I incorporated bits and pieces from each one to round out the final product. Perhaps a combination of ideas will spark your inspiration! Good luck!

You know, I too, don't have a formal dinning room, sometimes, I am glad I don't as it would become a catch all for my kids, etc. my dinning table is next to my kitchen like yours, and though I have the cheap kind of cabinets, I have been tethering on painting them white as well. I have an island where my sink is and I love it but I don't care for the color of my granite. I love also your backslash and I want to do white also, what kind did you use? Simply just perfection and inspiring, makes it feel like coming over for coffee, it's that inviting. Good job! Fireplace would be heavenly! Keep at it, if I were you. ;-D

    1. Anna, thank you so much for your kind words~ you just made my morning! I agree about the dining room, we debated as to whether or not we should have a family room or keep a dining room. Family room won out and I am glad, as I know it just would've been a place for my sewing machine and this kids' stuff most of the time! My backsplash is a simple subway tile. It is very basic, it is not beveled or wavy. The whole kitchen is actually a bisque color, but they have definitely have the tile in white, as well. Thanks for popping by Anna, I'm glad you found some inspiration!

  62. Absolutely love your kitchen I live in Nottingham England and we do not have houses the same as yours even our Cottages are not the same I live in a 3 bedroom semi detached house that has no character at all and I hate my kitchen there is no way I could ever make it as fabulouse as yours, even with a few of your ideas , but we are at an age where we are going to downsize for something smaller and hopefully I will be able to incorporate a lot of your ideas, I am a great believer in thrifting and making do and love all your ideas on recycling and crafts and all your floral ideas, you are such an inspiration and just love everything and all the ideas you come up with, your kitchen the same as the whole of your house is absolutely fabulouse looking forward to loads more ideas from you,
