Set A Fabulous Farmhouse Table With A Few Key Elements

We're old movie buffs around here. Black and white, the 30's and 40's, film noir and campy musicals, we watch them all.

While they may be new to my kids, I have seen most of these movies many, many times ~ enough times, in fact, to have memorized the scripts and quote them often, whenever I feel that a line pertains to our life.

My kids are being raised on a steady diet of old movie quotes.

I guess it's not so different than the way I was brought up. My mom was always dolling out life advice in the form of old sayings.

I used to laugh and tell her that those ancient words no longer applied. Look around mom, it's a new world.

However, the older I get, the more I realize how true those pithy one liners are, they have stood the test of time.

One of my favorites is the devil is in the details. My mom used to mutter this one while choosing jewelry for a night out on the town. Rhinestones or pearls? Silver or gold?

Accessory choices make a huge difference in design, the details are what ultimately defines the style. While the black dress and the farmhouse table set the stage, without the proper accent pieces, the design will fall flat.

This weekend, my husband and I had the chance to enjoy a little brunch on our own. That's rare, so I wanted to make it special and set a fabulous farmhouse table, but I was missing a few of those devilish details.

Thankfully, that was solved in a jiffy, with a little visit to Amara and their gorgeous website.

Farmhouse Kitchen Style
I partnered with Amara for this post. As always, all opinions are my very own.

First, I needed a some natural elements. After all, we're on the farm, remember?

Just like a barn, the wood of the table itself is what sets the stage, it's the foundation. The fact that this island was actually constructed from and old table makes it even more charming.

However, layering rattan or woven placemats or chargers on top of it takes the design up a notch. A wooden trough filled with fruit builds in a little rustic charm and some true farmhouse flair.

My pigs don't hurt either.

Amara Tin Bread Bin

Next, I added large white dinner plates, a staple of any design, and a white pitcher filled with tulips, of course, because flowers are another farmhouse table must.

Whether they are in a vase or on the table, they add life and invoke a feeling of harvest, you know, straight from the field to the kitchen.

They also provide a pop of color. I absolutely fell in love with these floral side plates. The table would definitely be missing something without them.

Pip Studio Pink Floral Plate For Elegant Table Setting

Of course, it goes without saying that every farmhouse table needs something old...or at least old looking. In keeping with the traditional feel, it should have clean lines and a simple design. Items like mason jars and old tins work well.

I popped online and picked out a gorgeous vintage style bread bin. It looks just like one my grandmother used to have and it's actually functional which is must in this tiny cottage.

Perfect.

Ideas For Farmhouse Style Table Settings

The table was topped off with a few mismatched linens, to soften the setting up a bit and two crystal water goblets for a little sparkle and elegance. Plus, it's always fun to place something a little unexpected in a room.

The only thing I'm serving up is old movie quotes and old sayings.

  1. I really like the floral plates... Are they metal? I guess farmhouse is an idea or the new American country, because most most don't live in farmhouses. But it is fun to grasp the nostalgia and bring it home. I love your table because the setting is in- between cottage and farm and unique. xoxo Su

    1. Hi Su! The plates are actually porcelain with a gold details. They are even prettier in person than they are in photos. I may have to add to my collection! ;) I certainly do not live in a farmhouse, I live in a beach cottage, but there is something that draws me to the simple, rustic style, reminiscent of days gone by. I think your description of in-between farmhouse and cottage is spot on and one that feels like home. Thanks for the visit!

  3. Love old movie quotes even those from the 80's and 90's ring a happy note of fun. The table looks fantastic - love the simplicity and the bread box is perfection because I'm a huge nut over anything that resembles enamelware. This was fun!

  4. My grandmother had a 4-BR farmhouse, and her table and kitchen never looked like yours; but, I'll never forget the fresh-killed fried chicken, homemade biscuits, brown gravy and fresh vegetables from her garden that she served for midday meals. She had two stoves: one was electric and the other burned wood. The wood stove had a "reservoir" where she kept hot water for "scalding" the dishes after they were washed. There was a summerhouse where she washed our clothes in rainwater during our visits in the summer months when we visited and a hammock and glider/swing which hung between the huge trees where you could fall asleep with no trouble on a lazy summer afternoon. The evening meal was set up outside on wooden horses with planks over them, cloths on top and chairs brought out from the house. We sat between the old oak trees and ate our meal in the early evening. I could go on forever with memories. My grandmother died when I was 21, and I do have a few of her things one being what was left of her Willow Ware china which started me on my lifelong search for pieces and using them for everyday dining in my own home. Ah, to be young again.

Your memories sound like a lovely dream. You have painted such a vivid picture with your words. I bet you had a ton of fun at that house. Breezy naps on a hammock, eating outside under those oak trees...I have similar memories of adventures at my own grandmother's house. Ah, to be young again is right! ;) Thank you for sharing your fabulous memories with us...and good luck on that china hunt! That's so wonderful that you still have that set to treasure. :)

  13. What a fun table. I think that the dough bowl is my favorite. I never see them when I am out thrifting. Your dishes are cute. I like that they both have a little dot border and that the floral has a vintage look. The size of your new plates was a wise choice. I can see them used as appetizer plates, dessert plates, salad plates, bread plates. They will look cute displayed too. And you baked. Nice.

    1. Lorri, you live on a farm, isn't this how you set your table each day? ;) I love that dough bowl, too. I never see them either, so when I saw this one, I grabbed it. The price was right, they wrapped it up pretty and delivered it to my home in a flash. It's on my table right now, filled with fruit and it looks great. I find myself staring at it. I love the plates, too. They are a perfect size and even though they look like they should be reserved for special occasions, I have been treating myself and using them. It feels decadent. And yes!! I baked! Can you believe it? I also ate that silly cheesecake...which was also decadent...and fattening!! ;)

    1. Don’t we all eat like that every day? ;) Honestly, this was the first time in years that I purchased and used pretty dishes that weren’t plastic or kid safe in one form or another. It felt good to sit at a big girl table. When the kids came home I told them to not even look at the pink plates! ;) They can play with the pigs! ;)

  27. Hi Kim, I sure am!!! It took me awhile to talk "farmhouse" because I didn't really know if my cottage fit the bill, but then I decided it did and that's that!!! Your table looks so pretty and I love all the little changes from fancy to just plain fine. I love picking up the salad plates from HomeGoods and changing them up with my solid white plates. I find it fun to change the settings even if we never eat a meal off of them! It's too easy just sitting in front of the TV. Bad girl!! Have a wonderful week..Judy

    1. Judy, I totally get it. I wasn't sure that my little beach house could take on a farmhouse style either, but then I realized that all decorating is an interpretation. Plus, what is farmhouse style anyway? Did old farmhouses really look this way back when? I don't think so! So like you, I blend my cottage style and my farmhouse style and come with an Exquisitely Unremarkable style that I love. ;)
