What Does Your Hairstyle Say About You?

What Your Hair Style Says About You

Clickbait

I hate titles like that and the articles that follow. It's no different than the ones that want to tell you about the ten decorating mistakes you're making right now. Complete and total hogwash.

They make me so mad. They're just there to sell magazines, full of nonsense, made up by some "expert" who needs to fill their word quota.

And it frustrates me beyond belief.

The fact is, there are no decorating mistakes.

You like the way purple and orange look together? Fabulous. You want to paint a small room a dark color? Go for it.

Are there optimal ways to style a room for traffic patterns and function? Sure. No one should be blocking a door with their barcalounger, but honestly, if you choose to own a barcalounger and put it only halfway on the rug and had have to shimmy around it to leave the room...and it makes you happy, who cares?

There is no right and no wrong. Decor is personal and so is hair.

And I really don't think that your cut says all that much about you.

I have basically been the same person all of my life. I have never liked fish or rollercoasters. I love the beach and since I was a child, it has always been my favorite place. Snow and Halloween? Nope. Christmas? My favorite.

I am a total homebody, the thought of flying has always made me break out in a cold sweat and I have been hanging out with the same guy since I was about 15. Pretty unexciting stuff right?

Well, according to the article I flipped through today, you would know all of that by my very boring haircut...which has been exactly the same for decades.

Presumably.

Of course, you'd be wrong.

I am actually quite adventurous when I enter the salon.

Dolly Parton Funny Hair Quote

Over the years, I have been a natural blonde, an ash blonde, a bottle blonde and a redhead. I have been permed, straightened, layered, pixied ~ albeit that last one was against my will.

I have bi-leveled, bobbed, angled and sheared. I've had super long locks and super short ones, as well.

Sometimes, my choices are on point. Other times, I look like Adam Sandler's ex-fiance from The Wedding Singer when she wakes up with bedhead in the Van Halen t-shirt.

Not good...but it's hair. I make it work until it grows out and then I head back to the hairdresser to reinvent myself, yet again.

What does that say about me? Hmmm.

I actually have no idea.

I think it means, that just like my clothes, I get bored with a look and like to change things up with the seasons.

Blonder and longer so I can ponytail my wet hair in the summer sun, shorter and darker in the winter to compliment my paler skin. Or sometimes it means that I saw a picture of someone with great hair and I want to look like that.

I never do.

But either way, I don't think that my straight style means I feel a need for control in my life or that my messy bun is indicative that I put myself last or that my blunt bob says that I am a no nonsense kind of gal. And I certainly don't think that my uneven hairline is a sign of a troubled childhood.

Yup, these are all bullet points from the magazine. Oh and by the way, these articles are everywhere. I found tons of them. And frankly each one was more ridiculous than the next.

Frank Zappa Long Hair Quote

One said that my long hair offers me protection, hiding my immaturity and lack of confidence. Ok...

Another stated that girls with shaved heads are more romantic and that redheads have the most fun personalities. Based on what facts? I have no idea. None were stated. Naturally. There were no answers to my burning questions either. For example, I want to be more fun. If I dye my hair red does that count? Will it change my nature as well?

What if I combine the two? If I shave my head and then go red will I be a more fun romantic? I'd really like to know before I do this. It's kind of a drastic move. Even for me.

And what if I do two opposite things at the same time? What does that mean? Online it says that a middle part means that I'm all business, organized and straightforward, while a side part means I am laid back and relaxed. Fun, and easy going. So what about those days when I start out with a straight part and then flip to the side after lunch.

Do I have a personality disorder? Is that really what my hairstyle says about me? Well, according this article it is a distinct possibility.

Sure, over the years, I've cut my hair short or gotten layers or colored it because I needed a change, but it didn't mean I needed to change my whole being, the core of who I am. It just meant that I had split ends or a few too many grays to pluck without creating a bald spot.

The idea that my haircut can tell you anything about me other than the fact that I really like my hairdresser is a bunch of boloney.

I've had long hair, I've had short hair, and I've had in between hair... and its all good. Morena Baccarin

Which by the way I haven't eaten in more than ten years.

But according the the article, I should love.

Because blondes with baby fine hair crave childhood comfort foods more than anyone else.

Sure they do.

What does your hairstyle say about you?

Hey~ before you go, let me know what you think!

I love comments and respond to them all.

  1. So funny! I must have a personality disorder too because I've worn my hair (worn my hair???) basically the same way for years. The color changes once in a while, but I like the way it looks. Sure, I was it was thicker and curlier, but it works. As long as it's clean and smells good, I don't care what meaning a hairstyle has. It's those stinky, dirty ones that have personality!

    1. Ha! I do agree with you there…when my hair is dirty it has a mind of its own. It will not behave. And I believe that if a style works, why mess with it. If it ain’t broke…as my mom used to say! Thanks so much for the comment and for popping by!!

  2. Interesting that some folks think our hair style defines who we are. I suppose it is a way that one can express herself. Hair, at times, can be a pain in the keister. It doesn't get any better as we age. Thinning and baby-fine hair with a mind of its own...oy vey... There is a lady who works at our local Meijer store who is still wearing the same hairdo from probably the 50's and actually on her it looks great. Apparently she is not tempted by enticing magazine articles. I guess I'm kinda like that...have gone back to a cut that worked years ago. Maybe that says that I'm boring...ha!

    1. I am a little bit like that too, Donna…every now and then I am just sure that I will look better with my old haircut from the 80’s. It was long and layered. Of course, I don’t wear it as big now, but it never looks quite the same…for many reasons, probably the main one is I’m not 18 anymore! That’s when I grow it out and bob it. It’s classic. And kind of boring. Thanks so much for the comment. I love reading everyone’s take!

This is so funny Kim! I totally agree with you. I see those clickbait titles every day. Sometimes I give in & look...too many times I'm afraid.

  6. Right now I am having bad hair. The medication I am taking is making my hair fall out and it was thin to begin with. I will be on new meds next week and hopefully it will start to grow back. I had a bob, but it is growing out now.

    1. I am sorry to hear that, Betty. I know that certain drugs and health conditions can really affect the hair. I hope that the new meds will be better. I have noticed that my hair is changing as I get older. I think these are things that cause us to change our styles much more than our personalities. Feel good...

  7. It's funny because I never look at someone else & think they are a certain way because of their hair.....unless maybe it's a very extreme hairstyle. We worry & try to look or be a certain way...thinking if we don't others will think bad about us. Most of the time..they aren't even thinking about us at all! They're too busy thinking about themselves....just like we are when we waste time analyzing ourselves.

So, you asked....my hair is a better than it was a few months ago but will never be it's best again. I've lost my young, wash & grow hair in exchange for the white wiry hair of old age. But I do still have hair & for that I am truly grateful.

When my son was young & wanted some extreme hairstyles I would fret & worry about what people thought. My husband would tell me to 'lay off him'...let him do whatever he wants with his hair. It will grow back & someday he may not have any. So that's what we did. And now my 25 yr old son has a pretty traditional short cut & is worried about going bald. Go figure.

    1. Jenny, I need to read your comment to my kids. It is an excellent point and one that I, myself, forget way too often. Wise, wise words...I also think age puts a perspective on things that we didn’t have when we were younger. I always wanted really long, thick, straight hair and it never happened. I remember lamenting over it in high school. As I’ve gotten older, like you said, I’m just happy to have hair…

  8. LOL I love that quote by Frank Zappa. Too funny. I have to agree your style of hair or decor is uniquely yours. I do my hair style not to feel a certain way but to have hair that works for my lifestyle and the kind of hair I have. My hair is thick and wavey and tends to curl up when I let it grow too long. So I have always had a shorter bob or pixie. I let my hair get a little longer in the winter and then cut it to a pixie in the summer. I call it my summer hair or wash and wear hair. No fuss no muss!!!! I think you hairstyle says what kind of hair you have, curly, coarse, thick, thin etc. etc. not so much your personality.
Happy Saturday. Have a great weekend.

    1. Isn’t that Zappa quote the best?? I saw it knew that I had to include it! And I agree with you, it’s more about your type of hair and your tolerance for fuss than your personality. And your stage of life perhaps? I used to have a lot more patience for my hair when I was younger…teasing, spraying, diffusing curls, hot rollers, Sun In. Today? Wash and go! That’s as good as it gets!

i have been cutting my own 'pixie' hair for the last 40 years. i thought well... i am sick of being butchered. i want a wispy feminine looking wash and wear hair and even if i butcher it too it will be free. but you know what? i got really good at it! it's probably saved me a ton of money over the years. and i love it. i don't color it. and i only have to please myself so ... like you think about the experts and whatever... WHO CARES? have to go now. still chuckling. GREAT writing. XOXO

  10. Those articles always make me cringe. How dumb do they think we are? What does my hair say about me? Ha! Mine says I am just grateful to have hair again! Like you, I really enjoy changing things, but I'm better off with shorter hairstyles. My next change may be "color." After chemo, my hair came in so dark, thin and baby-fine. I have been trying to get comfortable with a small sprinkling of gray in my very dark hair, but I don't really like it. My personality won't change with the idea that's floating in my brain, but I'm sure I'll smile more when I pass a mirror! No, no, I'm not going pink or purple!

Hope you are having a great weekend!
    Hugs,
    Carol

    1. It’s sounds like a you’re ready for a change, Carol and you are the perfect example of why these articles are garbage. Your hair changed after treatment, but your personality didn’t. And you’re not the only one who said that a health issue or medication changed their hair. Do these editors take any of this into account when they are scouting pieces? I doubt it, it’s all about the headline. I can’t wait to see what you decide to do and how you frame that pretty smile of yours!

  13. Fun post, Kim. If you can tell something about someone by their hair, I would say you are outgoing and adventurous. A 'Take charge" sort of girl. If you change up your hair as often as you say--you take chances. Right?

I do color my hair, as I wanted that dirty blond to end in my early twenties, and become a glamorous gal! I never made changes to the ash blonde color, and I've worn it every way from shoulder length to waist length. I'm not good with my hair, and making a pony tail or knot is very quick and simple. Still finding it hard to figure me out? Let me know if you do.

I got home from the hospital Wednesday. Each day I get better. It was the worst pain I've ever dealt with, but improvement the fastest. I may have to have the upper portion fused one day, so I'm being very careful in getting back to shape. Thanks for coming by and asking!

  14. Those ‘what your hairstyle says about you’ articles are right up there with what your lipstick, nailpoilish and earrings say. What next? Bras?! They’re really reaching for articles, but sadly the general public eats it up like a hyena.

I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to hairstyles, but when your hair is short like mine there’s only so much you can do shy of shaving it all off. These days I’m opting for relatively easy care, which is a cinch since my hair is fairly fine so it dries in about three minutes :).

  16. My hairstyle hasn't changed much in decades. I've gone from letting the natural curls do their thing, to straightening it and from no bangs to bangs, but other than that, it's pretty consistent. Although I did just switch from bangs to side swept bangs. That was a very daring move for me. Lol!

  17. A personality disorder? hahaha Who came up with that? I'm guessing a guy who went prematurely bald and over analyzes anyone who does anything with their hair. Color change? Must indicate a traumatic episode. Dramatic cut? Clearly depressed and needs therapy. What? They aren't a natural blonde/redhead/brunette???? What deviousness are they hiding? Who are they really???? Rainbow colors? That will be the subject of the next clickbait hair article: What does your rainbow hair color choice say about you?

  18. I don't change my hair drastically, but I do change it up slightly because I get bored with it. I refuse to go gray in my 50's, so I do get it colored and highlighted. Right now my style is in a short, angled, stacked bob. I have fine, wavy hair so it looks straggly if it gets too long.
