Hello Kitty Toast 2 Slice Toaster

When I was about twelve or thirteen, Hello Kitty was hot. Really, really hot. I don't know what it was about that little cartoon character, but suddenly every girl I knew was smitten.

I collected erasers, pencils, pads and folders. Notebooks, pens and socks and I was part of the junior high in crowd because of that stash.

I think it was the first time I was truly aware of what a fad was, as I watched the infatuation come and go in very short order.

By the time I entered high school, Hello Kitty was a distant memory. In fact, when I started teaching, and my kindergarten and first grade students were plastered with her big head, it barely even registered that it was the same figurine I'd spent my hard earned paper route money on years before.

It wasn't until I had my own kids that I realized how popular Hello Kitty's brand had become.

My youngest was especially taken with that cat. Dare I say that for a long time, she was obsessed and I found myself smack in the middle of Hello Kitty round two. Once again, I found myself purchasing journals, pencils, stickers and coloring books.

I bought her patches for her jeans, dolls, hats, gloves, bathing suits, pjs and a pillow case. Her favorite artist at the time, Avril Lavigne, even had a song about her.

Hello Kitty was still hot.

But as my daughter moved toward high school and more mature pursuits, her infatuation naturally cooled. Sure, she'd always love Hello Kitty, but her interest was dwindling and the new merchandise didn't really excite her anymore.

Then about three years ago, we were flipping through a Christmas catalog and it there is was, larger than life, the Hello Kitty Two Slice Toaster. No way. It was ridiculous.

Hello Kitty Two Slice Toaster

It was a giant Hello Kitty head with two slits in the top that would produce the image of her head on to your toasted item. I kid you not.

Of course, it made its way onto my daughter's wish list, half as a joke, I think, but Santa vetoed that idea since it was not cheap and we didn't need a toaster.

When Christmas morning rolled around, all was well, because I don't think she ever really expected it. Or wanted it.

However, the Hello Kitty two slice toaster became a huge joke in our household for the rest of that year.

You know what I want for my birthday?

Hello Kitty two slice toaster?

Of course.

Or

You know what I wish I had right now?

Hello Kitty two slice toaster?

Yes! But not really...

It was the go to punchline in our house...happy, sad or in between. Hello Kitty two slice toaster was always the answer.

So, when Christmas rolled around the following December, you know I had to buy that silly thing and pop it under the tree. It was one of the funniest holiday mornings we've ever had. It was totally unexpected and it had risen to such a mythical status, when she opened it, we all laughed until we cried.

Now, I wish I could tell you that we put it to good use after that, but as with many things in life, the build up was way, way better than the reality. Hello Kitty made decent toast, but it was still just...toast.

With a head on it.

Hello Kitty Face On Your Toast

Meh.

I already had a fabulous red Kitchen Aid toaster that I adored and used whenever toasting was necessary. I myself had received it as a gift, without as much fanfare, but I loved it just the same.

And it matched my kitchen perfectly, so when it was on the counter it looked like a decor accessory. Plus, it didn't need to be washed after each use, like dishes or the blender, and I didn't need to be a world class chef to produce something edible.

Red Toaster Kitchen Aid

In my book, it doesn't get any better than that.

And then one lovely day, the thing went up in flames. No warning, just smoke and sadness. The end.

As my husband placed it in the trash, I went online to order a new red KitchenAid toaster but stopped in my tracks when I saw the prices. Yikes. They ranged from about sixty dollars to almost three hundred. For a toaster? Um. No.

The one I had barely made it three years, so I was not going to splurge on a short term item like that again.

Yes, there were other brands that made toasters in red and they were much less expensive, but I didn't have time to investigate and besides, I was reminded, what was the rush? We already had a toaster.

We did indeed.

Hello Kitty Toaster With Toast

So. For the past two weeks we've all been enjoying Hello Kitty toast. One side looks normal. The other. Not so much.

It tastes the same. Well, almost, you see that head is created by a plate in the toaster that blocks the area from being heated. The patterned area is essentially un-toasted bread. Interesting.

Hello Kitty Toast

Even better though, is watching my strapping DIY guy make his breakfast with that bow clad cat head. It's like we live in a dollhouse. It just doesn't fit.

And you know it doesn't match.

I think that bothers me more than the crooked little head on my food.

Of course, it's almost impossible to make toast now without a good laugh.

And I can't imagine a better way to start the day.

Hello Kitty Breakfast

At least not until I find a cheap red one.

Hello Kitty two slice toaster anyone?

  1. How funny about the Hellooooooo Kitty Toaster. My girls were into Hello Kitty too. Remember Care Bears they loved those too.
It is amazing how things we loved come back around for our kids to love and now I see my grand girls getting into the same things. Glad you had the toaster to make fun toast with your kitchen aid burning out.

    1. I do remember Care Bears, Kris and we had those, too! They were popular when I was in high school. I remember my nieces went crazy for them. Thank goodness they don’t make a Care Bear toaster. Can you imagine? Ha!

  2. Oh yes, those fads we all love so much! If there was a toaster that did a Ringo Starr head, I'd be all over it...I think. It took me a few to discern Hello Kitty's head on the toast though. I'm not sure Ringo would turn out as well. LOL

  3. Oh, Kim, too funny. I remember Hello Dolly, Care Bears, My Little Pony, the only thing is they were popular when I was an aid at the elementary school and my kids were already in their 20's and 30's! HaHa, a different century! But I do have a two slice toaster that we have been using for years, It is just a regular toaster for two pieces of bread, but only has one slot so the bread overhangs each other and part of the bread doesn't get toasted. Whenever I bite into that untoasted piece it is like fingernails on a blackboard!! Just reading this over I noticed that I typed Hello Dolly instead of Hello Kitty. Now that really is reaching back in time!..That red toaster was really beautiful though..xxoJudy

    1. And now you have me singing...Well Hello Dolly, well Hello Dolly, it's nice to see you back where you belong! I'm a big fan of Broadway show tunes, can you tell? And your toaster sounds exactly like our Hello Kitty head. My husband is always asking, where is that un-toasted spot going to be? It is so odd to bite into it!! xoxox

    1. I bet you had a ton of Hello Kitty paraphernalia around your house, too, Julie! As a matter of fact, my daughter just bought a pretty pricey pair of specialty sneakers and guess who was on the back heel? Yup...Hello Kitty!! The obsession lives on!

    1. My nieces must be the same age as your daughters, because I remember those toys being big with that group. Polly Pocket was still going strong when my kids were little. We even had the CD of her movies and they used to watch them in the van on trips. My husband loved that! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Go Polly!!

    1. I wonder if they make a GI Joe or Lego Head toaster, Penny? Those were the big boy toys when I was young. I would take the GI Joes and have them "date" my Barbies and my brother would get so mad!! We laugh about it now.

  9. The toaster is so cute. Mine just quit last week and I bought a new one, but when I was looking for one I saw a micky mouse one. Never thought they made toaster like that.

  10. I love your toaster and that cute toast. It would sort of freak me out though to eat toast, then bread, then toast...LOL Toasters are outrageously expensive! I can remember when you get them so cheap and they would last forever! Love and hugs!

  12. This certainly made me laugh and also ask...what will they think of next??? My granddaughter has never really liked Hello Kitty (believe it or not!) She once said when she was very small, "It doesn't even have a mouth so how do you know when it's smiling?" She has a point!!!

    1. I’m with her, Cheri. As an impressionable teen, I think I went along with the crowd, without ever considering whether I really liked Hello Kitty, myself. As an adult, I think that most of her charm lies in the nostalgia factor. Honestly though, I think your granddaughter is on to something!!

  13. HAHA...yep, not ever a Kitty fan but that toast is cute. Not sure that I could enjoy the cute toast enough to invest in a Kitty toaster! Matter of fact, I married in 1980 and my toaster is only the 2nd one I have ever had. I don't use it often. Isn't it funny how these crazes come back around?
