DIY Custom Artwork In Minutes

For me, decorating is an ongoing process.

I really enjoy updating my rooms for each season.

When I was little, I remember my mom swapping out the bedding and the drapes a few times a year.

The house was constantly in motion, with a life of its own.

And I loved that.

So naturally, I do the same in mine.

White Cottage Style Framed Bulletin Board on a green painted wall

What's my newest update?

Well, it all started with this darling bulletin board I found in the TJ Maxx clearance aisle.

The white wooden frame was so sweet, I knew it would look perfect in my family room.

Unfortunately, finding something to put on the board, proved challenging.

Everything had to be just right. The colors, the composition, the size...oh and price. I mean when you constantly redecorate, budget options are the way to go.

But I kept coming up empty...and trust me, I looked for a long time, until I finally gave up and decided to make my own wall decor. Again.

Computer print out of floral bunch

Yup. I made my own custom artwork for, well, almost, free.

DIY Custom Artwork

I started by heading over to Canva. I have the pro plan, but they do offer a free option.

I simply chose a design I liked and played with the colors a little bit until I was happy with the tones.

It took a little trial and error and I did print my designs out a few times to make sure they looked good on paper.

I began with a central idea and then I added a few elements to the bouquet artwork I picked, to customize my design.

I wanted to keep it simple, so I started by adding a small scroll underneath the stems, but I still felt like it needed more.

A coffee stain pattern layered behind the flowers seemed to do the trick, it just gave my design a richer feel.

Once I was satisfied with my custom artwork, I had to print it up. Now, if you need to print anything 8x11 or smaller, your home printer is great and free.

Of course, my printer was too small for my frame.

So for about $11 I had it printed on a sturdy poster paper at Staples. I simply uploaded it from my computer via their website.

And held my breath.

You see, I'd actually never used this service before, so I wasn't really sure what I would end up with, but I'm happy to report that the print was beautiful.

The colors were true, the paper was thick and it was ready for pick up the same day.

Which was fabulous, since I couldn't wait to get it home and pin it to that burlap covered board.

In all its pastel glory.

Looking just right in my family room.

At least until fall blows in.

When I'll undoubtedly whip up another print.

😉

Wouldn't you?

  20. I love this idea Kim! I use Canva, but never for this sort of project, so now I am like what trouble can I get into now? You are right, the coffee stain really enhanced your print. You can also print from Walgreens, they have 50% off prints often. I have used this service many times, and I have never been disappointed. I have even made picture books from vacations.

    1. Oh...Walgreens is nearby, too. Thanks for sharing, I will definitely check out their services, because 50% off is fabulous. Can't wait to hear if you use Canva to make art. I bet you could make some of your own transfers since I know you love to work with them.

  21. Kim the artwork is beautiful. And I love the frame with those pretty scallops. I would recommend (because I can’t help myself) adding a white paper behind to cover the beige color. This will hide the fact that the art is not perfectly proportional to the frame. I’m always looking at these things. It’s a job hazard. Haha.
