I enjoy creative jobs and have held many, many of them throughout the years. I fleetingly mention some of them on my about me page, but I don't really think that I have ever discussed my theater gig, in any detail.

For the past decade, I have been costuming children, in one capacity or another, for a small theater group and it has been one of my greatest pleasures.

I started out as a volunteer, stitching a few patches or pom poms on items, but as the theater group grew, so did my responsibilities.

While I did not make the clothes, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the director, helping her vision come to life.

We would buy costume pieces and I would alter or refashion them to fit the character and the kid. I loved it. It fed my need to be creative and let me work with children, something I had missed since leaving the classroom.

I shopped, I sewed, I laughed and designed my way through ten years worth of shows.

Nothing beat the feeling of watching that curtain go up, kids transformed by costume and craft, knowing that I had a tiny part in the magic.

Unfortunately, now there are so many other responsibilities vying for my time, I have had to step away from the stage.

However, every now and then, I do help out and this fairy headpiece is one such example.

The director needed a few floral garlands to fit woodland sprites.

They were less expensive to make than to buy, they would be the exact colors needed and provide the perfect fit.

So I got to work.

HOW TO MAKE A FLORAL GARLAND HEADPIECE

Now I made my headpiece to with bright costume colors, but this craft can be customized for any occasion simply by swapping out the flower colors and ribbon.

Making a bridal headpiece? Or one for your flower girls or a communion? Use white faux flowers.

Want a little sparkle? Add white pearls or sequins or beads. The possibilities are literally endless.

The only big change I would make, is your wire color. Go for a silver instead of the traditional green. Green is great for woodland fairies, but not fabulous for a traditional bride.

SUPPLIES:

Floral wire

Faux flowers

Ribbon

Hot glue gun

Floral Headdress Wire Frame

Step 1 - I started with a circle made from floral wire and wrapped it with a pretty ribbon.

To made the wire circle, I loosely wound several stands of it in a large circle and then checked it against the head for a proper fit.

Step 2 - Next, I took my ribbon and wrapped it around the wire twice and glued the end in place.

I didn't pull the ribbon too tight, since I wanted it to have an airy appearance.

Step 3 - I removed the faux flowers from their stems and I glued the buds onto the ribbon. Bridal flowers often come in a package, so you might not need to remove any stem parts.

If you want a fuller look you could add some greenery. Or if you're making a crown for a toga or goddess party, you may only want to use the leaves.

Like I said...tons of possibilities.

Step 4 - To complete the headpiece I added a simple bow to the back, with long streaming ribbons to give it a whimsical feel.

I started by looping one long piece of ribbon around the wire frame and anchoring it with a bit of glue.

Finally, I used my Bowdabra Bow Maker to make a simple bow. But you can make any bow you like.

All in all, it was very easy project.

Honestly, I whipped two of them up in less than 30 minutes.

And since I had all of the items on hand it, it didn't cost me anything.

Of course, if like me, you are less into fashion and more into home décor, you could always use it to dress up a lampshade!

My daughter is not fond of this idea.

She thinks it looks best on her head.

The mom in me totally agrees.

But...he decorator in me thinks that's debatable!

  20. Oh,girl,I thought I was the only one who preferred to do costumes! I started making my kids' costumes when they were little and I loved it when I got a challenge, like a dinosaur or such. I had a friend who didn't want her kids to participate in trick or treating. But, I made her little boy into a walking bible. Used an extra large diaper box (I don't think they make them anymore), painted it and added gold on the side for pages and wrote "Holy Bible" on the front. She was thrilled with it and the little boy got to go with us.
