Whip up a sweet apple candle ring to dress your home for fall.

DIY Fall Candle Ring

Lately, online, all I see is pumpkins. Orange, white, purple and green...they're very pretty, but it's hard to take them seriously when outside my window it's summer.

It's 90 hazy and humid degrees here, the flowers are blooming in a burst of bright colors. There's not a orange leaf in sight ~ and I suppose that's the way it should be since technically, it is still summer.

However as the calendar begins to inch its way toward September 23rd, I do start to think about fall crafting....warming up this cottage with a little bit of autumn flair.

Right now, pumpkins are a bit of stretch for me, but apples? I could get on board with that...but, how?

Well, earlier this year, I made a dollar store daisy wreath. I was going to hang it on my front door, but after playing around with it for a while, it found its way to the family room as a floral candle ring.

Now I know they're not really in style anymore, and generally I'm not a huge fan of faux flowers, but it was just so cheery and bright and looked great accenting my hurricane glass, I kept it there all season.

I've grown accustomed to it, but last night it started to look a little out of place. The sun has already begun to set earlier and the room was calling for a different accent...an almost fall accent.

That's when the apples came to mind.

Candle Ring Tips

You can make one to fit any candle or hurricane, just adjust your wreath ring and apple size.

You don't need to use apples. You could make this with small pears, gourds, pinecones or acorns. Whatever floats your fall boat...yes, even pumpkins.

You don't need a hurricane or even a candle stand, you can plop your candle directly in the ring, but I highly suggest you use battery operated ones. They're just safer.

I had everything I needed on hand, except for those little suckers. I was able to grab them at the craft store for 40% off.

I started with my boring hurricane. I placed a battery operated candle inside it. I like the ones with the timers, on and off all by themselves and no risk of fire.

Next, I grabbed a wreath base. You can use styrofoam or metal ones for candle rings. For this project, I wanted a rustic look and I knew that some of the form would show, so I went with a grapevine.

Grapevine Wreath

I had this tattered one on hand. I needed to trim a bit of it with scissors to make it presentable, but it was a quick job. So if you see a less than perfect one at a sale don't pass it up. It's a simple fix.

Trimming a grapevine wreath

I placed my hurricane inside the wreath form to make sure there was a good fit and so I could judge the spacing as I began creating.

Making A Candle Ring

Next, I took my apples and glued them onto the grapevine wreath, one at a time, using a hot glue gun.  I placed them in a very haphazard fashion around the wreath. I didn't want it to look too done.

There are no mistakes here, just glue and go. You can see that the more apples you add the less the individual placement matters. It's all about the big picture.

I'm super happy with the way it turned out and it looks great in my living room.

Apple Candle Ring For Fall

It's the perfect way to add a little bit of fall decor.

Without a pumpkin in sight.

    1. Thanks so much, Susan! I figured it's a good way to get a little fall fix until I whip out the pumpkins in October.

  2. I am right there with you, Kim. I don't want to let go of summer so I replaced the hydrangeas with sunflowers. That works, right?? Your candle ring is beautiful...great way to transition to fall!

  4. It's lovely, Kim! I do love apples and pears, but I jumped right into all-things pumpkin around here. Wouldn't you know, just when I thought I might decorate my front porch, Mother Nature decided AZ needed more excessive heat warnings! Oh well, it's the price we pay for the glorious weather to come.

  6. This is so pretty Kim and it is your signature color too. Awesome. We had that heat a few days ago and now we are barely in the 50's so it probably is coming your way. Crazy to go from one extreme to the other. I actually have a sweater on today.
    Hugs and Happy Weekend.

  7. I'm in Alaska right now, and it's definitely fall here. No pumpkins, though. I don't think people decorate here the way they do in the rest of the World. But when i get back to Georgia in a few days I will be thinking about fall decorations. Pinecones will probably be on my list, instead of appjes. Good idea for a candle ring. Tbanks for the idea!

    1. Alaska!! How fun, Nancy. It's so interesting to hear about the home decor differences around the country. You'll have to let us know if the pumpkins have taken over when you get back to Georgia...although, I'm afraid you might be coming back to a lot of rain. Travel safely!

  9. Love your apple candle ring. I set up a lot of apple decor in September and combine it with back to school. You're absolutely right, though - we could use it all year as apples never go out of style. They're beautiful at Christmas too. Thanks for sharing your repaired grapevine wreath, and I believe if you make it small enough, you could use just a cardboard ring. I may stick a little everygreen(ery) in there at Christmas!

    1. Thanks so much, Barb! And yes, you could definitely use a cardboard ring. I love your idea of leaving it out for Christmas. I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps, I could sit the entire thing on top of an evergreen wreath as a centerpiece...hmmm. The wheels are turning!

  10. Kim, apples, nuts and even pinecones are pretty for fall. Your apple ring looks beautiful and I spy a sneaky little pillow or afghan in the background that might need to come to the forefront , looks pretty and interesting. I like to use real candles for taking pictures, the battery ones that I have seem to look too yellow in a photo, but I'm sure to blow them out right after I take the pic. A little too scary for me. I'd have real candles on my Christmas tree if I could!! But I suppose that would be off limits too. This world is just getting too smart!!.Happy Weekend..xxoJudy

    1. Judy, you have a keen eye for pillows! I found that one on sale at Pier One earlier this summer. I purchased a pair and love, love, love them. I'll have to take a good picture, because you're not the only one who has mentioned it. And when I was little I remember some families did have real candles on their Christmas trees. It was so cool...they would blow them out before bed and only light the tree for a few hours right before Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I could never do it, but boy it was super charming!!

  11. oh that's pretty! I'm more an apple fan than a pumpkin one. except for the pies. I love pumpkin pie.
but I have to say too... I don't think your hurricane is boring at all just plain. it looks very Shaker-ish to me... which I always LOVE! xo

    1. Thanks Tammy! And yes, it is a pretty piece on its own and usually it's undressed for most of the year. By January it will be naked again...I'm sure I'll have had my fill of flowers, apples and whatever comes next for the holidays! And pumpkin pie...yum. xo
