20 Fabulous Home Decor DIYs And Crafts

My goodness, how did we get here so fast?

I can't believe we're staring not only a new year, but a new decade in the face.

In keeping with tradition, it's time for me to take a peek back and highlight a few pieces from the past. Some years, I've gone the traditional route, counting down my most popular posts.

Other years, I've chosen to highlight my personal favorites, my writing pieces.

And still others, I decided to focus on a specific group of posts, like last year's round up of my most popular upcycled crafts.

While checking my stats and perusing through my blog to figure out what I wanted to share this year, I fell down the proverbial rabbit hole and realized that while I don't have a solid decade of writing behind me, I did start in 2013.

Seven years is the better part of a decade isn't it?

Hmmm. Now I had a dilemma. Do I share my most popular pieces from 2019? Or the most popular posts of the decade? Big decisions.

Well, I'm sure you already know where I'm going with this...so without further ado, here are a collection of Exquisitely Unremarkable DIYs and crafts.

Twenty of them in fact.

Ten are from this past year. Ten to wrap up the last {almost} decade.

Top Ten DIYs and Crafts of 2019

Here's what resonated with you this year.

10. How To Keep Your Grocery Store Roses In Bloom

How To Keep Your Grocery Store Roses In Bloom

Sure they look pretty in the store, but what happens after that first round of blooms disappear?

If you're me, you toss the plant...well, until this year when the nice flower lady showed me the way.

Now, I keep mine in bloom until I'm ready to move them outside. Or not....fabulous.

9. Paint By Numbers Craft

Adult . Paint By Numbers Craft

This was a new one for me. Adult paint by numbers. So relaxing, satisfying and grown up.

I'm usually a product oriented kind of gal when it comes to crafting. I want to get it done as fast as possible.

You know, quick and easy.

This was different, I thoroughly enjoyed the process and love, love, love the product.

8. Dress Shirt Apron

Dress Shirt Apron Pattern

Who knew a men's dress shirt could make such a darling apron?

Seriously, if I can do it, anyone can.

Anyone.

7. Farmhouse Cutting Board

Farmhouse Cutting Board Makeover

I know, I know, I'm not a huge fan of stencils, but this one turned out really cute. It's still one of my most favorite kitchen accessories.

Chickens, pigs and an old cutting board?

Yes please!

6. Oreo Bottom Cupcakes

Oreo Bottom Cupcakes Recipe

Technically baking is a DIY isn't it? Well, it is for me...frankly, I'd rather stencil than cook anything.

But this recipe for Oreo Bottom Cupcakes is unbelievably easy. And I look like a champ.

Delicious all the way around.

5. Dish Towel Pillow

Dish Towel Pillow DIY

Trim makes all the difference between a good sewing project and a great one. But it's not always easy to add.

Unless you find a way to cheat, like I did with this dish towel pillow cover.

Sew simple. Or not. Up to you.

4. DIY Wooden Countertop

DIY Wooden Countertop

Wooden countertops have always been my dream. In 2019 we finally dipped our toe in the water with the bathroom and we couldn't be more pleased.

Want to make your own DIY wooden counter in 2020? We chronicled the entire process.

Just for you.

3. Simple Shutter Makeover

Simple Shutter Makeover

Once you touch one bathroom...well, you know.

So we updated our master bathroom by giving our shuttered cabinet doors a sweet makeover.

With fabric. Go figure.

2. Vintage Style Bathroom Vanity

Vintage Style Bathroom Vanity

One of our big projects for the year was our hallway bathroom renovation.

Everything got a new look, including our old vanity. You'd never know it was the same one.

Seriously. The change was dramatic.

And are you ready for the drumroll? The big reveal...the number one most popular post of 2019??

It was...

1. Splatter Screen For Fall

Splatter Screen For Fall

A dollar store craft. I was a on a quest to see if I could make something elegant out of a cheap splatter screen and I guess you were all interested as well.

I have to say, I was pretty impressed by the outcome. And the price.

Proof that you don't have to spend a lot to decorate your home.

But we've always known that. Haven't we?

Here are the top ten perennially most popular posts from Exquisitely Unremarkable. Starting with...

10. How To Fix Chipped Cabinets

How To Fix Chipped Cabinets

If you have painted cabinets, chances are you have chips. Want them to disappear?

Me too...so I used a paint pen starting in 2017. Works like a charm, check out the before and after.

9. Cover Cabinets With Fabric

Cover Cabinets With Fabric

This is one of my all time favorite household decor cheats.

I use fabric to cover glass cabinets and my way is quick and inexpensive.

I shared it in both 2013 and again in 2015 and people are still checking it out.

8. Christmas Fan Blades

Christmas Fan Blade Upcycle

In 2016, I painted old ceiling fan blades for Christmas. It was an easy DIY and a great way to upcycle something that was just going to end up in landfill.

Win, win...and at Christmas! Love it.

7. Decoupaged Glass Plates

Decoupaged Glass Plates

In 2016, I also painted some glass plates. This time I had a little help from an old stencil.

It may not have been my quickest project, but it certainly turned out well.

And remains very popular, several years later.

6. Never Buy Bisque Appliances

Never Buy Bisque Appliances

Oh boy, lots of comments and commiserating on this 2016 post.

When my bisque refrigerator broke down, I had no idea I was in for such a hard time finding a new one.

That's when I rang the warning bell.

Maybe 2020 will be the year, they come back in style.

5. How To Make A Gift Basket & Look Like A Pro

How To Make A Gift Basket & Look Like A Pro

So way, way back in 2014 I wrote a post about how to put together a very professional looking gift basket.

I think it was my first big hit on Pinterest and people continue to flock to it.

Hint: It's all about the bow.

4. Three Things You Should Never Do To Your Home

Three Things You Should Never Do To Your Home

When you tell people they should't do something, they have to look right?

It's just about the only explanation I have for the continued popularity of this post.

Well, that and the photo of my friend Kelly's gorgeous house...I'm mean it's a total must see.

3. Box Pleat Valance Pattern

Box Pleat Valance Pattern

So. Here's a bit of surprise, a sewing pattern has been on of my all-time most visited posts...since - get this - July of 2013. A mere four months after I started this site.

And yet, people constantly tell me that they can't sew or won't sew.

Apparently, there is a large population out there who can and does.

And that makes me smile.

2. Dollar Store Snowflake Wreath

Dollar Store Snowflake Wreath

In January of 2014, I was already so frustrated with winter, I needed a pick me up. I grabbed a few leftover ornaments and voila.

I made a wreath. Honestly, I didn't think it was all that creative.

But every year since, from November to February it's a favorite. On my site.

You know...the girl that hates snow?? Ironic, isn't it?

Ok. So what could possibly be more popular, more intriguing, more interesting on a thrifty DIY and craft blog than a snow wreath made with dollar store supplies, you ask??

1. Creative Ideas For Galvanized Tubs

Creative Ideas For Galvanized Tubs

Yeah. This one. Creative ideas for galvanized tubs.

A round up of what to do with them if you were lucky enough to score a few.

Honestly, it's not surprising. I mean the last decade was defined by vintage farmhouse decor. And galvanized anything was hot.

Will they hold their spot at the top of the heap in the decade to come?

I don't really know.

Trends come and go for sure.

But I can't wait to see what pops up next!!

Can you?

Wishing you all a wonderful 2020! And sending a message of warm thanks your way for another wonderful Exquisitely Unremarkable year, filled with visits, comments.

They mean more than you'll ever know. Cheers!

  5. I admire your crafting talent so much, Kim, as well as how beautifully you write. I adore the vintage pull rings you used on your bathroom vanity during the remodel! Even though I haven't crafted in decades, I have been getting the urge to lately and have collected a few ideas. I think it's all the Christmas crafts I've seen in the UK magazines this year and I really do treasure the crafted gifts that my daughter-in-law gives me. It would be nice to have a Christmas one year where the whole family agreed to only give each other something we'd made with our own hands. Do you see that ever happening in your family?

    1. Thank you, Dewena!! We actually do give each other handmade gifts very often. My daughters are very artistic. Besides their music (which I do consider a homemade gift made just for me 😉)...they are very good at paper crafts, crocheting, rock painting, etc. They're my favorites!! And I think you should dive back into crafting this year. It's a meditation for me.
