Customizing A Store Bought Wreath For Summer

June 10, 2022

I was looking for a cascading floral wreath for my front door, but couldn't find one in my colors or my price range.

Instead, I customized a store bought wreath with flowers from the dollar store and made my decorating dreams come true.

Embellishing A Store Bought Wreath

For someone who's obsessed with decorating, there's no better time than a change of season.

It's an opportunity to fluff and feather.

To update and swap.

To infuse every room in the house with a little seasonal flair.

Both inside and out.

Now normally, when summer weather moves in to my little northeastern harbor town, I pull out all the stops.

I decorate the patio and pool area, open the umbrellas, drag out the pillows and plant lots of flowers.

However, this year, June showed up while our yard was a mess.

The patio was being replaced, so the pool wasn't open and instead of decor, there was just a lot of gravel and dirt back there.

That meant the only place I had to decorate was my front door.

And since it was the one and only place I had to get creative outside and add some color, I wanted to do it up big.

I also wanted to do something a bit different, which wasn't easy, because over the years, I've tried a lot of different things to make my house smile.

Unique door decor for every month of the year.

From flags and flowers, to letter embellished wreaths and tulip filled rain boots. But I wasn't up for a repeat.

Patio Construction In Process

Therefore, I decided that some research was necessary.

Everywhere I went I kept my eye on the doors. Nothing really stood out, until one day I passed a lovely baby blue door with a fabulous wreath.

It was very colorful, but the eye catching part was that it had flowers that trailed down from circular frame. In a very tasteful way.

But I couldn't remember it exactly, and nothing came up when I searched for it online. Hmph. So I decided that I had to find it again.

Unfortunately, my middle aged brain was a bit blurry on its location, so it took me a few days to remember where'd I been when I spied it.

And when I finally found it, it looked nothing like what I remembered.

There were no floral tendrils and, as a matter of fact, that blue door...was orange. Disturbing, but I had bigger issues.

I wanted the wreath I had in my head. The one I thought I saw on that front door...driving by at 40 mph.

Oh boy.

Well, clearly the only way to get there was to DIY it.

However.

I rarely, make my own wreaths from scratch anymore. I think the last one I made was my dollar store daisy wreath

It usually just doesn't pay.

What I do instead, is find a sale priced wreath and embellish it. Much cheaper and much easier.

So that's where I started. I found a geranium wreath with a few hanging flowers for about $15.

Red Geranium Wreath

It was very red, which is normally a good thing, but it was too monotone for this summer. I craved more color.

A quick trip to Dollar Tree fixed that. I grabbed a bunch of bright stems, in pink, yellow and white, on the same day I found the floral contact paper for my desk drawer cover.

Dollar Tree Fake Flowers

It was a very lucky Dollar {twenty five} Tree kind of day.

If my wreath didn't already have hanging flowers, I would've bought a few vines and added them to create my own. Just a tip in case you can't find a cascading wreath and like the look.

Once I got home, I charged up my cordless glue gun, hung the wreath on the front door and started making outdoor decor dream come true.

Customizing my store bought wreath with the colors of my choice.

Colors that popped and brought a little bit of what I have going on inside, outside.

I have to say, the cordless glue gun was very helpful. I was able to work on the wreath outside, in the place it would be displayed.

Hot Gluing Faux Flowers To Wreath

It made a huge difference and I was able to arrange the flowers in a way that looked best on the door.

Plus, I got to chat with all the neighbors who were strolling by. Crafting with company is a definite bonus on a sunny, almost summer, Saturday afternoon.

To get started, I added some big pink flowers in between the red.

Adding Flowers To Wreath

Then I glued several of them onto the hanging bits. I tucked in a few delicate white blooms and deep purple tones, too.

Every now and then I would step back to the curb to get some perspective and adjust my decorating course.

Overall though, I just kept removing flowers from the plastic stems and adding them to the formerly plain wreath until it was super full.

Wreath With Trailing Flowers

And overflowing with color.

Decorating my front door.

And welcoming summer into my home.

Just like the wreath I saw on my drive weeks ago.

Well sort of.

Summer Trailing Flower Wreath

But exactly like the one I saw in my head.

  2. Kim the wreath is lovely but the steps really got my attention as I need to redo our back entry area from 1 step to 2 and there is only so much space on one side due to a garage entrance frame. I think I can add depth to each step by cutting into the frame trim work and sliding in something like slate or etc to make the change work. Could you pleas give me the size including depth of what you used. This step area conversion has been driving me crazy and your is lovely.

    1. Hi Cyndy! That's so funny...yesterday the patio mason commented that my front porch steps were all wrong and needed to be altered, so I'm glad you like them, because we do, too. The height of each step isn't uniform, which is what he was referring to, but they were built in the 1920's and all we did was remove the old, chipping slate (which had become a tripping hazard) years ago and pop on the blue stone in its place. The pieces are each 1" thick, 32 inches wide and different widths to fit the steps. The overall area of the top step is 65x29 and the bottom is 83x39. I hope that helps and I hope you can make something like it work for your back entry! ☺️

    1. Thanks so much, Nancy! It really is a charming little place. They invested so much time into the design back then…so much thought. The stones on the front are the same as the ones on the fireplace, so when you walk through that door, it feels seamless. Plus, the chimney stones match. I just don’t think they make them like that anymore…in general. I hope you’re having a lovely Sunday!

    1. Thanks so much, Mari! It's certainly not the same as having a beautiful front porch like you have, all that beautiful space to decorate and enjoy, but the stone is a small consolation!
