Make a quick DIY mini stocking banner with this simple no sew patten and easy directions.

And decorate your mantel, tree or staircase for Christmas!

Mini Felt Stockings

Around here, Christmas decorating is no different than the decorating that goes on during the rest of the year.

Things start out one way and change quickly, based on my mood.

Or some cute project that inspires me.

And that happens a lot.

Oh sure, there are a few anchors, like the placement of the trees or the little white lights that frame the windows.

However, everything else is fair game.

A Santa or bottle brush tree that starts out in the kitchen, may spend the middle of the month in the family room and Christmas Day in the living room.

And honestly, some items, like a tree whose lights burned out yesterday, might end up back in storage before the holiday even arrives.

Of course, there are usually new additions, too.

For example, this week, after placing my freshly painted Flexible Flyer on the fireplace, I decided that the mantle needed a little something to dress it up.

Simple Christmas Sled Makeover

In the past, I've had elaborate garlands up there and lots of jazz, but in these simpler times, I was looking for less. But what?

Then it hit me. I could make a banner.

A few years ago, I made a banner for Valentine's Day, hung it on my kitchen hood and became an all out garland junkie. I was hooked.

I made banners out of everything and anything and for any and every occasion. And while, it's been a bit since I've constructed a new one, I'm no less smitten.

My latest was inspired by the stockings that weren't hung by the chimney with care. In fact, they were still in storage.

Over the years we've collected so many different colorful versions, when all I really wanted was a delicate looking neutral set. I keep meaning to make some, but, well...you know.

So this year, I went tiny. I figured that way, I could have my banner and my neutral stockings all in one. Fabulous.

How To Make A Winter Stocking Banner

I hung my banner on my mantel and it's strictly for decoration. It would look equally sweet on a staircase railing or even as garland on a tree.

However if you wanted a functional stocking banner, to stuff, you would just add a another sock to the back of each stocking.

Use a bit of glue or stitch them together.

Then you would have an actual stocking garland that could be used as an advent calendar or treat filled banner.

Supplies:

Felt- white/ cream/ ivory - or any color you choose
Polyfill
Rope Trim - mine was 3/16"
Hot Glue Gun/ Sticks
Mini Clothespins

Tiny Vintage Stocking Ornament

I started with little adorable vintage stocking ornament.

It belongs to my sister, but somehow, it's been in my possession, hanging on my tree, for years.

Since it was the perfect size and shape, I traced it onto a piece of paper to use it as my pattern.

Next, I grabbed the few sheets of white and cream colored felt that I had in my stash and cut out several stockings.

Mini Felt Stockings

To add a little bit of interest and some fluff to their flat surfaces, I decided to use polyfill. I didn't need that much.

A little handful did the trick.

Adding Polyfill To Stocking Banner

I simply tore it off in bits, added hot glue to the felt and then pushed the polyfill onto it.

I used my fingers to shape it the way I thought it looked most natural. I didn't fuss with it too much though, and it there were any stray strands, I trimmed them with a scissor.

Using Hot Glue To Add Polyfill To Felt Stocking

To further define the cuff of the stocking, I used a small piece of roped twine trim that I had in fabric scrap tub.

I hot glued that in place, as well.

I also wrapped the edges around the sides on each and end and added a bit of glue to secure them on the back.

Glueing Trim To Felt Stocking

Once each stocking had been completed, I brought them into the living room and used miniature clothespins to clip them onto a small beaded garland that was already in place.

It's such a tiny accent, but it warms up the room nicely, adds a bit of whimsy and compliments that sled perfectly for Christmas.

And when January rolls in and I remove the wreath from that sled, I can actually use the same technique to make a small mitten banner.

As an ode to winter.

I think that would look equally as darling.

Or little hats. Or...

Hmmm. I might be on a banner jag again.
