Oftentimes, when my husband goes out riding on his ebike, a bike he built himself, by the way, he brings back treasure.

You may remember that on his last trip, he brought back a slew of curbside finds.

Among them was this old metal birdcage.

He thought it would look perfect in our cottage style garden and he wasn't wrong.

Now, I'm a huge fan of rustic decor, unfortunately, this piece was just a little too rustic - or should I say, rusty - for my taste.

Plus, parts of it, like the sharp edges on the damaged finial, felt like a health hazard.

And I knew it was only going to get worse with exposure to the elements. In fact the entire structure was just going to degrade further without help.

That's when Mr. Handy Dandy came to the rescue.

He gently filed the top and filled the concave and dimpled areas with this two part epoxy. Not pretty, but it did the job.

While it dried, he and I went to Home Depot to choose a spray paint - one of my favorite makeover tools.

We settled on Rustoleum's Protective Enamel Gloss in Sunburst Yellow.

Two coats was all it took to totally transform this faded curbside find into a bright new addition to my garden.

The only thing left to do was choose a plant and pop it inside.

To be honest, when I first saw the color of the cage, I wasn't sure about it. Sunburst indeed. I almost missed its original pale, rusted yellow.

However.

Once I saw those bright pink flowers tucked inside, my entire opinion changed.

I loved the contrast, the color and the height it brought to that corner of the garden bed.

A quick and easy DIY during the dog days of summer.

And a vibrant focal point, while I wait for the Morning Glory to bloom our our second hand trellis.

Not bad for a little Saturday afternoon bike ride.

Don't you agree?

😉

What color would you have painted it?

  1. You are so lucky I do not live by you because I would be stealing I mean borrowing this for my garden. I love the yellow it makes the flowers pop. Great job as always. Hugs. Kris

  2. I love your birdcage. I bought a vintage one at a garage sale years ago. It still hangs from the Japanese Maple in our backyard. I can see it from our kitchen, seating room, and living room. I spray painted it white, and every spring I put a plant in it. You won't believe what color it was when I bought it! Bright yellow! Haha!

  5. I just love it! I must admit I would never have thought of painting it yellow, but after seeing it, I don't think I could find anything better. Your hubby did good in picking it up and it's a perfect redo!
