Exquisitely Unremarkable ~ Addicted to Instagram

April 14, 2015

I am really not one for social media. I have stated before that until I started writing my Exquisitely Unremarkable articles, I did not have an internet presence whatsoever. Of course, the powers at be all said that I needed to get on Twitter and Facebook and Google+ immediately and so I did, albeit reluctantly.

I jumped in head first, posted, shared, liked and tweeted, but it clearly was not for me. While I am still there, I have to say that I don't share much or interact on those sites very often. I may add a link to my latest post, but I figure that unless I have something really amazing to say that's going to be adding some great value to the conversation at large, why bother?

I stick to sharing here and that's really just about as social as I want to be.

However recently, I have fallen head over heels for Instagram. It is very similar to Pinterest, my other love, with all those stunning shots. I am an extremely visual person,  I love taking photographs and looking at gorgeous images, so it's a perfect fit.

I started out with an account to monitor what my kids were up to, but pretty soon, I found my own fun, posting photos like the black and white one above. I find that I have greater freedom on Instagram when it comes to what I share. They are mostly photos that I would really have no reason to post here on my site. For example, I took that shot of the  pillows stacked on a chair in my bedroom, because I liked the way the light was streaming into the room that morning. There is no tutorial and I am not giving you any decor advice, so there is no point to share it here.

Yet on Instagram, my pillows become art. There's no need for explanations or reasons to post, unless I want to. I can just snap away and share. It's a fabulous creative outlet and I am smitten.

I love looking at other people's photos, as well. I follow a few fellow bloggers along with people who do not blog. It's like flipping through a lovely magazine, each page filled with the most interesting and inspiring pictures. It's right up my alley.

What I love most is that my feed is totally customizable. Last week, I wrote about the lack of color in many of today's home decor magazines. On Instagram, I can search for colorful rooms and find them in a jiffy. My entire feed is whatever I make it.

I have to be honest though, I do not follow a lot of people. I am very picky about what I want to see.  I don't play the follow for a follow game on any social media platform and Instagram is no exception. I like to watch flowers, beach scenes and fabulously styled home decor go by. I crave pithy saying and interesting quotes. I giggle at delicious babies and cute furry faces and I am awed by nature in all its glory.

If you share any of those things, I would love to check out your profile. Leave it in the comments and I will pop by for a peek.

If you would like to see what I am posting, you can check out my profile at https://instagram.com/exquisitelyunremarkable/

After all, I may not be very social, but every girl needs a few friends...and if you come bearing pretty pictures, even better!

    1. Julie, you were one of the first people I followed. I love seeing your NYC photos, crochet projects and yummy meals go by! They always make me smile!

  2. Love your black and white photo. It is truly lovely. I can see it enlarged and framed and hanging in your bedroom--perhaps in the grouping over your chest of drawers with the white frames. The texture in the photo is just amazing.

  3. Well, I can really resonate with your post in the fact that I am not on much social media at all. Not Google, Facebook, Twitter, or even Instagram. I do occasionally go on Pinterest, but seldom. You have piqued my interest though for Instagram, because I too love taking pictures of random things that really have no place to "fit", lol. Blogging is my one social outlet, and I really enjoy it, without any stress. I don't intend to make the worlds best blogger, or anything like that. I just enjoy sharing what is going on in my life. I will visit your place on Instagram and see what I think. Perhaps I've stayed off that wagon train long enough? Lol...

    1. I think you would love Instagram. It is very pretty and the photos you share on your blog would really fit there. I adore looking at them and I am sure others would, too. I tried the social media route, but have backed away significantly. Even Pinterest has started to bug me. There’s some weird stuff showing up in my feed lately. The powers that be over there seem to be in control now and I don’t love it.

  4. The photo is very pretty. I don't use Instagram, primarily because I don't understand it. I like Pinterest, but don't use all the others mentioned, so it might appeal to because it is visual.

  5. I need to check out Instagram . . . I think I signed up . . . now to find my PW . . .
I will practice as soon as I finish the outdoor cleanup, pruning, changing plantings, setting bedding plants, filling my pots and containers with some annual flower beauty . . .
    Then . . . I will try, look for me . . .

    1. Stacey, I would not have any idea how to post on Instagram either, if it weren’t for a few bossy teenagers! They showed me the ropes. It’s easy, you should give it a try. The photos you posted on your blog would be a huge hit! :)

  8. Kim, I am addicted to Instagram. Yes addicted, if there is an Instagram Anonymous I would need to attend. But then that would just be another way to meet more Instagramers. Lol I so agree with Stacey, I would too!

  9. I love Instagram, too! But I can't use it because I don't have a smart phone. But I bookmark the ones I like to follow and will definitely be following yours, Kim! I'm also like you and have no desire to be on Facebook or Twitter. Now, Instagram? Yeah! Maybe someday!

I do not Facebook or Tweet ... I do like Instagram. I am like you with your ideas regarding social media.

  12. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I've never been to Instagram and not sure whether or not to spend the time. For me there has to be a bit more substance than a pretty picture. I enjoyed hearing about your experience with it. Very interesting.

  13. Hi Kim! I followed you from Nuttbrown Cottage Blog. I have so little time for social media that I don't participate as much as I'd like, but I do love Instagram. And like you, I'm particular about who I'll follow. Lately I've been trading follows on Etsy, but I'm putting a stop to that. I especially love the photos of gardens and landscapes, cute furry animals, and SOME of the home decor. I'm not into gray and white and white and gray and gray and - well you get the picture - so as soon I see that over and over, I'm done!

    1. I found you from Kimberly's blog, too!! That's funny! I just peeked at your feed and it's lovely! We have the same interests for sure. I really like your chicken! ;) That is something you will not see from me. A suburban squirrel or the occasional bunny, but that's why I like Instagram. I don't necessarily have time to read about a more rustic lifestyle or chickens, but who could resist a picture of the gorgeous country life!

  16. I have an Instagram account, but I don't use it. Although I can understand the interest and why people like it, I just don't enjoy it. Which is weird, because I love photos and I like taking photos and posting them. I do like my Facebook page, because people who don't have blogs do have Facebook and follow me there and also comment. I don't like Twitter. Even though I have #'d my Saturday series there, I'm going to stop. It's become such an annoying social media. A lot of negativity and demeaning tweeting goes on. Dennis and I have had lots of talks about technology and questioning why we need it. If I didn't have a blog I think I'd seriously consider doing away with all this stuff and go back to a land line phone and letter writing. Oh, now I sound like a crumudgeon!

    1. I think that many people feel the way you do, Nancy. It becomes a trap or addiction though and people feel as if they will miss something if they disconnect. I recently unfollowed everyone (all 40 friends!) on Facebook. I just want to keep that page so I can have my business page. I do not want to share anything personal on Facebook, nor do I want to get my information about friends there, so I have essentially removed myself. I am trying to go old school! ;)

  19. Dear Kim ... I try to keep my computer time as simple as possible. I no longer have Pinterest. I am not fond of Facebook., although I do have it. I don't do Twitter or Instagram. I do enjoy my blog and love visiting other women who have blogs and are like minded. I cherish the sweet friendships that I have made through blogging. I find it overwhelming at times and not as simple as I would like it all to be. I have given up my Smart Phone as everything from my computer was on my Smart Phone. I just find it all not simple, a bit frustrating and very time consuming. These are just my thoughts and my way of thinking. I love visiting your blog and all that you share here. I hope that your weekend is filled with sweet pleasures and simple blessings. Hugs ♥ Teri

    1. Teri,

I agree with you, there’s too much technology and I am trying to separate myself from it, as much as possible…if possible. I need my phone to stay in touch with my kids, but I do not scroll constantly. It can be overwhelming and time consuming. I got pretty caught up with it all when I started blogging and I stepping back from anything I do not enjoy! Thanks for the visit, Teri! Have a great weekend…and I love that heart! How do you do that??

  20. I love that black and white photo with the light streaming in :) Were there no Instagram you could have shared it on a Wordless Wednesday. Not sure how many people do that now, but I suppose that it started for just the reasons that you stated! Sometimes the photo is enough.

I don't use Instagram, not at the moment, anyway : )

  23. I started using Instagram to monitor my daughter too and then fell in love with it for the same reasons you love it. I love the pictures and how easy it is to use. I keep an account for decoding/home/blog things that is public and I now have a private family account too. I plan on printing the family one into a book at the end of the year for a sort of photo diary/journal. I am loving Instagram!

  24. I hate twitter and FB, although on the later I have a page for a non-profit I deal with. I've never been on Instagram and it sounds great, but my problem is that I have an addictive personality and I already spend way too much time on here and Pinterest.

By the way, there's nothing wrong with posting pictures like that pillow one. Have you ever been to Dear Daisy Cottage? Kim used to post pictures like that all the time and so do I now that I think about it. I think that makes me a copy cat ;)

  25. Kim, your photo is absolutely GORGEOUS!! I'm not on Instagram. I keep thinking I need to set up an account but just can't bring myself to do so. I already struggle with Twitter because it is just not for me. It's hard for me to grasp a concept of just blurting out random comments all day long. Maybe I'm too "old school" for Instagram....come on over and let me pull out the box of photos to show you...LOL. Have a great day!

    1. I miss the old photos, Benita. I find that I don’t really go back to my computer to look at them. I like pulling out the boxes and albums and flipping through. You would love Instagram though, so many pretty pictures and much less blurting!! I agree…that is not my cup of tea at all!

  26. About a year ago when I switched phones I realized if I had a FB app on my phone all my FB friends showed up as contacts on my phone so I deleted the app. Of course, what that meant was I couldn't post pics directly to FB so I started using Instagram and included FB when sending the pics. So to make a long story short (too late for that, right?), the main reason you'll see photos in my Instagram feed is because I wanted to get them to FB. I have a hard time grasping the concept of something that is so fast moving as Twitter or Instagram. Old school I guess.

As for that bedroom photo...I think you could post any picture or pictures that make you happy, anytime you feel like it. If it makes you happy, there's a pretty good chance it will make your readers happy too. I don't participate in Wordless Wednesday simply because I'm not a fan of 'deadlines' and knowing I have to do something on a certain day gives me hives. :/
