How To Make Taper Candle Rings For Christmas

Make your very own taper candle rings with this quick, easy and elegant home decor craft for Christmas.

Grab your supplies at the dollar store and whip them up in minutes for a fun and festive holiday look.

Evergreen Christmas Candle Rings

Candles are a decorating staple in my home all year long. However during the Christmas season, they're literally everywhere.

I used to rely on mini lights to illuminate my rooms, but for the past several years, I've replaced them with candles.

There's just something about them. A bit more charming. A bit more cozy.

And a whole lot less annoying to set up.

No cords, no wires and no timers.

And since I use these battery operated taper candles there are no flames either.

I just pop those babies into my {thrifted} brass candlesticks, hit the button on the bottom, to set them, and then every night after that they go on automatically.

Like magic. Christmas magic.

Some of the candles are naked.

I leave them unadorned and enjoy the simplicity of their lines and style.

Others get dressed up with candle rings, taper rings to be specific. You know, they look like little wreaths hugging the wax.

I have plain white berry ones, that I use all year round.

Then I have several that are made of shiny red balls.

But with candle explosion that happened this particular Christmas, due to my expanded collection of brass, I didn't have enough rings to go around.

And to be honest, I didn't even think about shopping for more, since they can be rather pricey. I just let that idea go.

Then last night, I was sitting at my kitchen table, staring at those flickering lights when a lightbulb went off in my head and immediately I knew how I was going to make my own.

I've made candle rings before and glitter candle holders, both with supplies from Dollar Tree. So it's no surprise that's where I grabbed my supplies this time.

Although...I have to say, that's not why I bought these particular items, but once I had them in my house, I knew they were perfect.

If you're not into the DIY and want a quick holiday fix, here are a few options:

Super simple and very inexpensive.

Here are my supplies:

I found them all at Dollar Tree, but you can get them online, too.

The basics:

Wired Garland Ties
White Berry Picks
Red Berry Garland

You can also add:

Mini pinecones
Tiny bells
Small shiny balls
Miniature holly leaves
Glitter

These candles:

Plain- similar to the ones I have
They also come in birch bark and I love the swirls.
Some have remotes and timers.

There's no right or wrong here, add whatever makes you smile and whatever coordinates with your own decor.

1. Make The Ring

Are you ready for the very complicated directions?

I'm just kidding, because literally all I did was wind one of the evergreen garland ties loosely around my finger a few times.

And then I wrapped the ends around each other to form a fluffy circle.

Once I had several made up, I started decorating them. Now, I only had the red pip berry garland and white berries in my craft cabinet, so that's all I used.

Then again, I'm a simple girl, I probably wouldn't have added much more.

2. Add Berry Garland

I started with the pip berry garland, because it didn't involve glue.

I wrapped the wire around the garland tie and kept fluffing the greenery as I moved around the circle.

When I was satisfied with the amount of red I added, I stopped.

That's it.

Very easy.

3. Adding Berries To Candle Rings

Then I moved onto the white berry ones.

For those I picked clumps of berries off the stems and used hot glue to add them to the rings.

I used a lot of glue and added them both as individual berries and in clumps.

Then I placed them around the inner edge of the circle in a random pattern.

There was no rhyme or reason to where I put them, I stuck them wherever I felt they looked best.

And, trust me, none of them were the same.

Adding Faux Berries To Christmas Candle Rings

I made three of the white berry version and added them to my silver thrift store candelabra.

An elegant addition to my holiday hallway.

I was so taken with the way they turned out, and transformed my candles, I wanted to add them to every single candle I owned.

Luckily, that pack included 12 ties.

Enough to make the entire cottage just a little more festive for Christmas.

And I did it all in about 10 minutes and for $1.25.

How fabulous.

Mini Candle Wreaths DIY Tutorial

Hey, before you run I wanted to share a few quick candle ring making tips.

1. I made tapers using one tie per ring.

You can make them fatter if you want by doubling up the ties, but I like them as a demure accent.

2. This same technique could also be used to make pillar candle rings.

Or votive wreaths by adjusting the size of the center hole.

3. Use several ties bunched together for the pillars.

Since you'd want a fuller look.

Or you could use a piece of regular garland for the pillars...or if you're going to make a ring for a large hurricane candle glass. The scale might work better.

4. You can modify this home decor craft for anytime of the year.

You can make candle rings for spring or candle rings for fall.

Swap out the evergreen for small scale floral garland for spring/ summer or leaf garland for fall and you're set.

5. Lastly, be careful with that glue gun.

It gets very hot and those berries are tiny.

Just because the candles don't have flames, doesn't mean you can't get burned.

And that's no fun before Christmas.

  3. Those are super cute. And a great idea to make your own. I went awhile back to hobby lobby and Michaels looking for candle rings. The young gals working there looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. Then the other day I went to the store looking for cocktail bread for my cheese fondue and got blank stares....I'm really starting to feel old...lol.

    1. So funny, Dena!! I remember when I was young, my mom had them on all the candles in the house. Then they were considered terribly outdated, now I don't care if they're in or out, I love them. However, everytime I share them, people ask about them, so I guess I'm not the only ones who think they're charming!!

  5. Oh goodness, another great idea. I love it.
But... I can not find taper candles at actual shops in my neck of the woods. I have one on the dinning room table that I light for our dinner, it is getting shorter and shorter. Ha! I guess I will have to look online.
    Isn't that goofy.

    1. That is goofy!! It's amazing what stores DON'T carry anymore. Candles are a basic. You would think they'd be everywhere. I hope you find some!!

  7. These are pretty, Kim! And wow, your three branch silver candelabra is stunning! I've been thinking about ordering some glass bobeches for my taper candlesticks after cleaning the wax off all of them for Christmas (my freezer loaded with them for a day so I could get the old wax off easily). The little rings would dress them up nicely. It probably would be a good idea to switch to battery operated candles for safety reasons. I love your rings, especially the ones with white berries.
Thanks for telling me about your rotator cuff injury, Kim. I do hope it continues to heal!
